OT Gasol gets benched for 4th quarter loss against Nets

The solution for Memphis is to trade their aging, malcontent big man for....an old, even more malcontent big man? Besides, when was the last time somebody took one of the Spurs' castoffs and actually improved them?

If I'm in Memphis' shoes, I'm looking for young guys to rebuild around.
When did Aldridge become older than Marc Gasol?

You don't have to be a MF'er. Look at Brad Stevens. It's easier for old white guys to be MF'ers with young, predominantly black guys. What's really hard is to communicate and get them to act like a team. Think of teachers you've had - the best teachers get students to contribute and take charge of their own success without having to yell at them.

The idea or reasoning behind it isn’t the issue. Good teachers and good coaches etc. It’s the NBA and the players. Brad Stevens is an anomaly. Fizdale was tough on a star player and he was fired. This is what coaches have to consider. It isn’t college or HS. You don’t coach guys that way or you’re gone.

And I’m not saying you need to MF guys. People wanted Stotts to jump guys for defemse or whatever. He knows he can’t do that.

Well he sit Gasol last part of the 3rd and all the 4th. He your best player and at least show management that your trying to win. Remember Stotts did it to Nurk and everyone went nuts. But Nurk was okay with it and Gasol wasn't okay with his benching. But haven't Memphis lost 9 in a row and think that has something to do with it and not putting Gasol back in was the final nail on the coffen.

Wow. Did not think he would get fired. The fact that he was able to win anything with most of a roster that is D league quality should mean something. I am all for bringing him on as an assistant.

What's cheaper for owners? A coach earning minimum wage or players who are the highest paid in the league? Who pays tickets to watch Tisdale coach?

And it was Fizdale who was getting plenty of hype even a month ago after their great start to season which saw them beat Rockets and Warriors. I think all games they lost during the 0-8 run were without Conley, they never had an adequate backup for him and it shows. Chalmers used to be good but he cannot run the team anymore.

...Blazers inquired about trading for Gasol recently?! :dunno:

...no, just some random Instagram page @nbathrone rumors with no link :sigh: and Hoops Hype speculation (http://hoopshype.com/2017/11/27/top-potential-destinations-for-marc-gasol-if-grizzlies-pursue-trade/)

I don't mind the idea of Marc GAsol because he is so damn good but looking at it realistically does he put us over GS/Spurs/Houston. If we are giving up a big asset, to use at least, in Nurkic is the return going to lineup with either giving us cap relief or making us a viable option of knocking on the Western Conference Finals in the next two years, if the answer to both those questions is no, which imo it is in this case, then its not a sure fire no brainer move.

What do you guys think of Gasol at PF? He's more mobile and/or a better shooter than Aldridge, Favors, Gibson, Millsap, and some other Western conference PFs. He'd be a his mentor for our bigs and be that 4th scoring option we need. If we could trade Turner, Meyers/Harkless, and some combination of picks for Gasol+Evans, I think you have to do it.

...what if it could be both (partially)? Dump the ML/ET contracts and whatever else it takes outside of "The Big 3" :dunno: This would be a dream scenario (throw in picks if need be) --> http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yahqv982 :devilwink:

I think he could be had without giving up our big 3. Question is, can we contend for WCF with a Gasol+Nurkic frontcourt?

...the Spurs are also looking to secretly unload Aldridge so look out for them to swoop on Gasol as well :excl:

The two C lineup with Nurk will not work. And sending Nurk to the bench will not work either. Denver tried all this.

Not sure why (if...) we made an offer.

Well maybe we actually offered them Nurkic.

I don't think he's for sale. They wouldn't have fired Fizdale if he were.

Doubt it. Nurk fits Dame/CJ window better than Marc, and that's what Neil always seems to stress when bringing in players.

To get Gasol without giving up any real great assets I think they would ask us to take on Parsons contract . I don't see Nurkic/Gasol working well togethor but it we got Gasol without giving up Nurkic i'd look to move Nurkic.

Not sure trading for him makes sense, unless they've quickly soured on Nurk.

Nurk and Gasol wouldn't work as a starting 5, since neither one is a PF.

Plus, I think it would send Nurk into a big funk with flashbacks of being paired with Jokic in DEN. It may be immature, but Nurk seems much more motivated when he is clearly his team's best big man. I think he was jealous of all the attention Jokic was getting in DEN and it demotivated him. If you bring in Gasol without moving Nurk, you risk repeating the same situation.

Yes, Marc Gasol is a great player, but given their ages, and the fact that Nurk is playing better defense than Gasol this year, I'd rather just stick with Nurk than go after Gasol.

Although Fizdale isn't close to the same level as Jerry Sloan, this reminds me of the situation with Deron Williams in UTA several years ago. The team was underachieving and management chose to back their star player over their head coach. They didn't fire Sloan, but undermining his authority led to his resignation, and then they ended up trading Williams anyway.

So, MEM could end up losing both their head coach and their best player. You could kind of see this rapid decline coming back in the summer of 2016 when they chose to invest nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in two players with significant injury histories.

They were trying to get Melo this summer. The front office is in full win now mode. With the injury curse on this franchise it's better to not even rely on these mytical "windows."

Gasol at PF would be a great fit. He's a great passer that can hit the 3 and is still a solid defender. He doesn't want t mix it up in the paint as much anyway, so I don't see him causing issues with Nurk.

The salary is the problem with him. They would have to take back some long-term garbage like Turner to make the numbers work. They could find much better trade deals.
