Should Melo get to wear Roy's #7

I see a lot of people like that on Twitter, and get the feeling they're younger and haven't been fans of the team for more than a decade or so and really overinflate Roy's impact and missed out on the 90s teams and the early 2000s ones and didn't realize how much better it really was back in those days. Yeah he was an amazing player, but he was just that, he's no Damian or Clyde.

Was Roy even really better than CJ? If you gave CJ the reins and let him be the #1 I would bet that he could easily put up Roy numbers over a season.

So the vote in here is overwhelming in support of Melo getting the #7. Why is Brian Noe saying Portland is up in arms against it? Hellooooo. I love B Roy, but he's not Dame. The Blazers should let him wear it. I know Melo said he will stay with 00, but give him the chance to turn 7 down.

Because...Brian Noe is a rust-belt-born outsider that knows nothing about how Blazer fans really feel?

I thought he went to LaSalle High?

He is a schmuck though, and like Chad Doing, just says shit to get people to listen to his show/interact.

Ahh, LaSalle High School in South Bend Indiana.

Guy's a tool though.

Roy's best season compared to CJ last season

It's cool you are ignoring advanced stats, which almost all favor Roy. Even in CJ's best season he's never even approached Roy's 08-09 season. Raw stats are so misleading these days because of the scoring and pace of play are just so much higher. I remember when being a 20 point scorer was a big deal 12 years ago. There were 20 guys over 20 PPG in 08-09. There's was 31 in 18-19.

Do you think Roy could have put up those stats next to Dame?

Roy was essentially filling the same role as Dame. The difference is that Dame does it better. So I guess we could compare Dame to Roy, because it's actually unfair to CJ when he's the second option and Roy was the clear first option on his team.

Yes?

Roy put up a 27% usage rate in 08-09, that was his highest usage season. CJ was at 27.5% in 16-17 (his best year), and 25.9% last year.

Roy was through and through a much better and complete player than CJ, and I don't trust anyone that actually watched both players play and came to a different conclusion. The way Roy controlled the game in his prime is comparable to Dame in the last few years. CJ is a shot hunter in the vein of Jamal Crawford/Lou Williams. He's never shown the ability to control the game like either of the other two guys.

And by the way, in 8 years of Dame we've NEVER had a season where we won more games than we did with Roy in 08-09, and I don't think that team was more talented than any of the ones we've had in Dame's time here. It was arguably less talented than the Dame/LA/Batum/Wes teams as well as the 18-19 team that went to the WCF.

I'm not here to argue that Roy is better than Dame, and I know that time makes people forgetful, but Roy is getting completely disrespected for what he actually did on the court. I believe you should only compare players to their contemporaries, and Roy was universally considered a top 7 player in 08-09. Even in Dame's best year last year, he was only in the discussion for top 10 when you compare him to the rest of the league.

Last point on Roy, and this is not a comparison between Dame/Roy, but if we had Roy, the problem of having that secondary playmaker that we've had since the beginning of the Dame/CJ era would be solved. Even if Roy never learned to play off ball, I'm confident Dame could, and we wouldn't need to worry about Dame being trapped for the 4th consecutive playoffs in a row.

I'll take Chad's show anyday. He is more realistic than most anyone else affiliated with the Blazers. He'll call crap out when it's there.

Agreed about Chads show vs Noe's show. Noe comes off as someone who seems to think he's the only one who believe something (that everyone believes) and that we're idiots for not being like him.

"Now my boy Damian, you all are missing out something special here" or some shit.

Solid list. Other than Sidney Wicks..

Sidney Wicks - I challenge you to find another NBA player that had their scoring average go down every single year starting from their rookie year. That's especially impressive since Wicks played for 10 seasons.
1971-72, 24.5 ppg (ROY, All-Star)
1972-73, 23.8 ppg (All-Star)
1973-74, 22.5 ppg (All-Star)
1974-75, 21.7 ppg (All-Star)
1975-76, 19.1 ppg
1976-77, 15.1 ppg
1977-78, 13.4 ppg
1978-79, 9.8 ppg
1979-80, 7.1 ppg
1980-81, 6.8 ppg

0 playoff games with the Blazers. Played in only 9 playoff games his entire career.

I'd think about retiring Steve Blake's number before I retired Sidney Wicks'.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I swear I heard that Wicks is the only player in NBA history to have his scoring peak in his rookie year and his average decrease every year subsequent (that means after @THE HCP ) to his rookie campaign.

“I would be honored if he wore it,” Roy told The Athletic. “So we should (let him have it).”
