Enes Kanter says he left Trail Blazers for Celtics to win a championship

He’s put up big numbers, but Kanter’s teams have never made it past the Conference finals. Kanter reached the brink of the finals this past season with the Portland Trail Blazers, but after hitting unrestricted free agency for the first time, he chose a new home for one reason.

“It’s my ninth year in the league and I understand that, for many people, the money is important,” Kanter said in an interview with HoopsHype on Sunday. “For me, the most important thing is being with a team that you’re really happy on and playing with a team that’s competing for a championship. That’s was the big thing for me. For everybody else, the money matters [more]. For me, the No. 1 thing was winning.”....(continued)

The team didn't really seem sad to see him go. His personality kind of wears on you.

My gut feeling was that he was like Theo Ratliff, who conned Portland into a huge contract and then returned to being an injury prone so-so player. Unlike Theo, Enes didn't have a stupid GM who was just trying to placate a burned fanbase. Olshey didn't NEED Kanter as much as Patterson/Nash needed Rafliff.

Kind of a crappy headline. The question asked in original interview was what was most important heading into free agency. There was no reference to Portland, or why did you want to leave there.

He said the exact same stuff after he was claimed by Portland.
He wants to win and there is nothing wrong with that.
I imagine there was a NYK fan saying 'yeah Kanter GL winning a championship in Portland'.
After he said he believed Portland could win a ring.

How was your free-agency experience and what were the main factors you were considering?

Enes Kanter: It’s my ninth year in the league and I understand that, for many people, the money is important. Headline only readers will start to bash kanter now, please dont.

Agree with all of the above. I have no problem with Enes' comments. He worked his butt off here, played through injury and fasting, and did everything he could to help the Blazers win. The Blazers had one TPMLE to use on Kanter or Hood and gave Enes the first shot. He dithered too long and the Blazers had to move on to Hood. I hope Enes has a good season...every game except against the Blazers.

But that flies in the face of his decision. If winning was the most important thing, and he loved it here, why not just sign immediately with Portland? We called him first, we offered him the contract first, he balked so we moved on. The only reason to balk would be the contract amount and we had a very finite amount of money to work with. Winning clearly wasn't the most important thing.
