good surround sound system...

Ok, I'm contemplating replacing my system (It's just a Sony AV System 3...at least that's what the remote says).

I'm tired of the sound being watery and cheap sounding (I got it for free...and truthfully rarely use it).

I want something that actually has good sound, and doesn't have dobly digital (I'm not impressed).

My preference is cheap, because well, like I said, I rarely use it. And I'm a cheap bastard.

Any suggestions (for like under 500)?
