For a while, Waiters's play was actually the story of the game, with his 11 fourth-quarter points. Two of those came off a nifty up-and-under, past Mo Williams, which Waiters followed up with cursing out/trash-talking/sending season's greetings to the Portland bench. Famous last words. A couple of minutes later, the Portland TV feed cut to a shot of a totally untroubled-looking trio of LaMarcus Aldridge, Nic Batum, and Wes Matthews. Over the course of this season, Portland's big four — these three and Lillard — has started to have the same Jaws-theme swagger that the league's best starting combos have when they're about to come back in to end a game. It's like when Russ and KD, or Blake and CP3, or Duncan and Parker get off the bench; it just puts the kibosh on whatever bullshit run the opposing team is putting together.

I noticed that after he hit a shot over during the replay on comcast. Forgot to mention it when the "Westbrick is a prick" topic came up in another thread. I remember, cause he was really, really barking and looking right at the Portland bench, and I immediately though, wtf is wrong with guys like him and Westbrick? Their parents not love them or something?

Some guys play better when they're talking trash. Reggie Miller was one of my favorite players when I was a kid, and he might be the biggest trash talker of all time. Jordan talked trash. Bird talked trash. It's part of the mental side of the game.

hahaha thanks for the post. That was a fun read. Oh, by the way, fuck waiters..hahahaha

I'm old school (or maybe just old), but I've never been a fan of trash talking. It motivates your opponents, and eventually makes you look like an idiot when it blows up in your face. Sure, if you're Larry Bird or Michael Jordan, you've earned the right to talk shit because you've proven time and time again you can back it up. But when some nobody like Dion Waiters starts running his mouth someone needs to remind him: "Dude, your Dion Waiters - STFU."

Too funny, I typed my reply before I read yours and Bird and Jordan were the first two I thought of. But, as I said, those guys were Larry Fucking Bird and Michael Fucking Jordan, two of the all-time greats, not Dion fucking Waiters (he's not even worthy of a capital "F").

They just look like idiots. Dame walking off like he's been there and done that a million times is so much more memorable. Let your play do the talking. Because the game vs OKC and Clev were so close, you could even say that Westbrick and Waiters' mouths cost them the game. lol And that - is priceless.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Talk is cheap..waiters talking shit cracks me up. Our guys should give him the MVP of the game...

I agree; it doesn't even give the opponent the satisfaction of feeling like you're happy you won. Like when Dallas beat us, they acted like they won a WCF game. I felt pretty good knowing they got way amped to beat us. Lillard hitting shots and walking off? Another day at the office. That opponent was nothing special.

Everybody starts out as a young pissant trying to talk shit. In Reggie's book he tells a story about how he was a rookie, and Chuck Person told him to talk shit to Larry Bird when they were playing Boston in the Garden. It didn't go well

I read his lips: "I HEARD SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET CALLED ME A SOUP JUGGLER! LOOK WHO'S JUGGLING SOUP NOW!"

"Hear Jimi?" I don't get it...

It's a reference to "white men can't jump." when woody and wesley are arguing about if wesley really wants to win. Woody's character says "I can hear jimi!" to piss off Wesley's character. It's in reference to him being white and jimi hendrix being black.

Sounds interesting. I have not read that book. It does sound vaguely familiar, like some thing he made reference to on air.

I love that movie.

I get that it motivates some players when they trash talk, but it also motivates players who are better than you to wake up and play better as well. This is why I get so pissed when fans try talking trash with super stars from their courtside seats. Who do you think is going to come out on top in those situations?

Let sleeping dogs lie. Or wait until after the game.....

I talk so much trash from the sidelines. It definitely gets into their heads. Kobe wouldn't even look in my direction and he was piss poor for the game. I've done it in other games with players talking trash back. When the player is out of the game because he wants to prove something to me, that helps this club.

So... Lilliard's really a white guy? Now I'm REALLY confused...

It's a great book. It's all during the Pacers/Knicks series and the Pacers/Magic series of the mid 90's. Lots of cool and funny inside information. Great read.

Difference is Jordan and Bird could talk all they wanted because at the end of the night it was their team winning. Waiters just looked like a talented punk.
