Wish I could've seen that. I like Wedge, and figured he'd always take the "too classy to say anything bad about former employers" side.
With that said, I know he's got stories and feels screwed, so it's interesting to see some of this start trickling out.
As a long-time M's fan (and even a beer vendor for part of the 2001 season), the issues with Lincoln, Armstrong and Nintendo are well-known and documented. The only new stuff from Baker's article (and he's pretty legit, btw) is the magnitude of Jack Z's idiocy and bluster. It was assumed by most (including Baker) that Jack Z. was a good talent scout, but poor manager of "talent developers" in the minors or coaches in the majors (see: hire of Wakamatsu). That went away partially when Wedge was hired. It came back when he went with the "power or bust" offseason of Morse/Morales/Ibanez?/Bay(??!!!?).
Maybe he lucked into Cano, maybe he overpaid by half, maybe he was shrewd, whatever. Cano's our best hitter by far, and will be far into the future, presumably. But for Jack Z to be shown as a guy who doesn't even understand analytics and bases decisions on BA/HR/RBI/ERA/W's? You don't need to be Keith Law to be a GM, but you'd think you'd have a guy or two in the office you listen to.
In short, just...wow.
