I wonder how Greg would feel in OKC, a metro HALF the size of Portland.

Perhaps that was the OP's intent, but that post was a red flag to me about Oden, considering him admitting that he drank too much.
"It's not a big deal," Oden said. "It's just something I wanted to do. It just kept going through my head that I have to change something."
Now, let's be clear. Nobody on the Blazers was willing to say that Oden's affection for the night life had become a concern. Nobody.
And to be honest, Oden admits that he hasn't totally gone cold turkey. There has been an occasional adult beverage here and there.
"Hey, I'm 22," Oden said. "I'm legal."
I talk to the bartender and he said Oden had a diet coke and ordered out for a grill chicken salad. So what's the problem? Where was he seen at again?
This board takes little quotes or statement from articles and analyzes and probably over analyzes them on a daily basis.
In this case we are taking a picture and what we know about Oden to draw up some opinions.
What does the picture tell you? Heck it's so blurry I wouldn't even know it was Oden unless someone told me. Big problems occur when peoples memories about what was said are just as fuzzy as the picture posted.
So we have two drinking jokes(quotes of these would be nice), misinterpreted articles & a blurry picture. Solid.
When did he admit this?
Greg Oden's mind appears to be mending quicker than his knee - Jason Quick
Quick basically contradicts himself in the article claiming Oden gave up alcohol, while burying the actual fact that he never said he had given it up entirely deeper down in the article.
So you can de-wad your panties a bit over a grown man having a drink and wanting to be left alone.
), but misrepresenting what people have posted seems to be near the top of the list. As I said, I don't care if Oden is out at the clubs drinking, but then again, I don't have to decide whether or not to re-sign him.How many other Blazer players, off of the top of your head, have your heard give an interview to a beat writer in which they said that they needed to cut back on partying and drinking alcohol?
As I said, I don't care if Oden is out at the clubs drinking, but then again, I don't have to decide whether or not to re-sign him.
Don't blame me because I was concerned about this years ago and took a lot of crap on BBF when I posted that his comments about turning 21 troubled me.
That's my point, does it have to be solid to give an opinion here. I had an opinion about Oden based on something someone said he said. My opinion is he may have an alcohol problem. Not solid evidence, but guess what, correct opinion.
It's a fuzzy pic of what may be Greg Oden @ a club. No the clarity doesn't matter, I was alluding that peoples memories were as fuzzy as the picture. You're the one suggesting the picture and your 2nd hand sources were enough to convince you that Oden has a very serious drinking problem...So let me play your game . .. what does the clarity of the picture have to do wtih anything? We know it's Oden, does the clarity somehow change your opinion. It must because you made an issue of it . . . the picture is fuzzy. Solid.
Back-it-up. Where did he say this? Link the article.
Then why:
You don't care, but you've been concerned for years about it?
When did he admit this?
He no longer drinks alcohol. No longer goes to clubs. No longer partakes in late-night fast food.
And those three facts might be the biggest news that came out of Monday's media day.
"It's not a big deal," Oden said. "It's just something I wanted to do. It just kept going through my head that I have to change something."
Who was this "someone" & what did they say that convinced you of Oden's drinking problem?

If I posted a picture of Greg Oden's Drivers License someone would complain that he wasted all that time waiting in line at DMV when he could have been working on his game. Dude can't win.
You forgot to add this part to your cut/paste.
Perhaps he never literally said he drinks too much, although I had heard otherwise even without him saying it.
That he has already (allegedly) walked back from points #1 and #2 make me question his sincerity. As I said, though, if he wants to have a good time, I don't care. The Portland night clubs need business, too.
"They kind of blew that up a little bit bigger than what it is," he says. "I'm not saying that I stopped drinking cold turkey. I have a drink. Occasionally I go out with my teammates. I don't do it as often as I did before. I didn't really go out and drink that much anyways. I just made a little bit more effort. I feel the same. I wasn't out there partying every night and drinking every night. ... This summer I really didn't want to go out. I just wanted to concentrate on getting my knee back."
No duh he didn't say it, because it wasn't true. It was crap Quick said to pad out his story. Quick contradicts himself in his own article as I mentioned in my previous post.
You're holding him up to standards he never set for himself. They were set by Jason Quick, who, again - contradicted himself in his own article. How can he fail those two points when he never promised or implied that he would follow them?
In fact just a month after that article Oden had this to say to ESPN:
Also I've never had another acct here. I've mainly hung out @ RealGM, but have decided to expand my patronage of other fine board establishments.

OK for you to say I don't buy it (BTW-how do you feel about it, all I have read is you telling posters why their opinions are flawed) . . . but it seems like you want to riducule some who want to go out on a limb and have an opinion about something.
So, I read in your quote from Oden that he did say he was cutting back on alcohol, just not giving it up completely.
Again, what's your point? How does it relate to me years ago thinking that alcohol may become an issue with him? Why did he cut back?

I think his point is making sure that you're not attributing hypocrisy to Oden based on Quick's reporting... not based on what Oden himself has said.
If it's NOT his point, then I'll make it. Because you're holding Oden up to a false standard.
Ed O.
So someone who normally has two beers a week decides to go to one beer a week. That must mean they had a drinking problem in the past because they reduced their consumption? Perhaps he got burnt out on going out to clubs or parties, maybe he decided he wanted to focus on something else? Just because you reduce your consumption of something doesn't mean you had a problem with it before.
Have you even read what I've posted in this thread, Ed? I don't care if he drinks, bump lines, whatever. It's his life, and his money, and his future.

Why, then, did you post "You forgot to add this part to your cut/paste." and then bold a part of an article that was not a quote from Oden?
Did you bold that part randomly, or were you using it as evidence of some sort?

PapaG has met his match!!

BTW, whatever happened to The_Taint on ESPN? Did he ever appear after most of us left that board?
I also wonder why it took you years to leave that dump, but that's for another day, isn't it?
I inaccurately used it as a source, since it wasn't a quote, yet Klinky then proceeded to actually quote Oden saying he was cutting back on alcohol, which I will use as support for my opinion that there are red flags for him with partying and drinking.
GM Me: How much money are we going to invest in this guy? What are the risks associated with it, on the court, injury-wise, and off-the-court
As an aside, I see that RealGM is under new ownership as of 1/27/11. I also see that is the date that you joined this board.
Well your opinion is your opinion I guess, but I think the information you've some how derived over years doesn't even stack up to a house of cards, more like a pile of poo. I guess if you hang around in the poo long enough you don't smell it anymore.
I think something like, oh, I don't know, four knee injuries has a lot more pull than "the guy drinks occasionally".

They redesigned the website. Ryan Hoak is still the CEO, at least according to the sticky they put on the forums. As for me, I've already posted all you need to know. You can snoop around the Blazers forum and see my posts if you're really interested.
You came here guns-ablazing (no pun intended). I think we both know why, don't we?
