Greg Oden back to rehabbing

Well maybe he noticed that cutting out the drinking and clubbing and eating fast food led to the same miserable result of a microfracture surgery and another lost season.

If people want to make his struggles into some kind of mental or moral deficiency then that's their prerogative -- how else are people going to channel their anger and disappointment with a clean conscience? -- but it's not like lifestyle changes did him any big favors. Maybe, just maybe it's all shithouse luck and there's nothing to blame but poor genetics?

Alcoholism can be genetic. :D

I don't know if he is an alcoholic and I don't know if that has what has led to injuries (I doubt it).

But I do think to be an elite player, you have to commit yourself to the game. I wonder if Oden has it in him to give it the commitment it deserves. I do think he may be waek mentally. Telling to press you quit drinking and clubbing and then being seen clubbing and drinking three months later . . . change of heart or lack of will power?

I did. What about swearing off clubbing? He said that and he apparently he hasn't.

He says he wants to eliminate it so no one talks about it. He said taht 3 months ago and then he is clubbing and drinking.

And did you see how surprised Roy was that Oden announced he stop drinking

And Roy said that he heard "out of the blue" this summer that Oden had stopped drinking.

"I was like, 'Oh wow!' Those are the types of things I like to hear," Roy said. "I know it was a big decision for him. Because for him, he liked to go out. So it's good for the team.

Jesus did you read the article. Can you read between the lines . . . when Roy says "he liked to go out" when talking about drinking, what do you think he is saying? I'm guessing your statement he goes out drinking from time to time is a real bad opinion.

Roy was surprised because he uses Oden's place as his crash pad when he and his friends are out partying.

Except he never said he quit drinking.

Even worse

"It's not a big deal," Oden said. "It's just something I wanted to do. It just kept going through my head that I have to change something."

So he said he wants to quit drinking because of public perception but admits he has a drink now and then . . . you tell me want that says about him. Can he stop?

And if public perception is a concern and he want to eliminate that (his own words), why is he going to a bar and having a drink. Did he say he goes to a lub now and then? No. Did he say he jsut in case people talk about it I want to eliminate that? Yes

Aren't his actions the exact oppostie of what he said he was trying to do?

Accusing him of being a drunk fatso with poor work ethic on Internet forums is going to make him heal quicker? Maybe it hasn't been investigated because there is nothing to investigate? Maybe they investigated and found nothing to be concerned about? I dunno. Maybe we should investigate if Oden standing on one leg and howling at the moon is going to make him a better player? Sure there's hardly any evidence that it works, but shouldn't we at least try it?

Also where did you get your 10% chance figure from? I'd like to see some math on that one.

i never called him a drunk fatso. i said his partying and poor diet arent that of an elite athlete, which could be reason for his repeated injuries. again, you are completely ridiculous. black and white still...

and if its .01% its worth talking about. unless you think the last few years have been working well. in which case youre an idiot.

You are THE one saying we can't judge and that we DONT know. How can you honestly sit there and type that Oden's injuries are NOT HIS FAULT?!?!?!?!

Are YOU a doctor, have YOU been working on/ with him? YOU don't know. You are not allowed to assume...

I believe in Occam's Razor. You would have to make a pretty convoluted case that Oden intentionally stepped on Bynum's foot, that he ran into Corey Maggette's knee brace on purpose, that he split his own patella when no one was looking or tore his own cartilage while practicing before the L*ker game. Feel free to state your logic behind your reasoning.

It looks like he's talking about giving up late-night fast food to me.

Why do you think he's talking about drinking? I don't see that in the quote at all.

I'm not a #1 pick for an NBA team and labeled as the next Bill Russell. If I were, I would expect the criticism.

I'm also not re-injuring the same muscle, over and over.

Completely different set of circumstances.

What does it matter if you're a #1 pick or not?

And exactly what injury has GO had that has been a repeated one?

Like I said, you hold yourself to a lower standard. That's cool.

Alright, if dumping on Oden makes you guys feel better. Fine. I've done all I can do to change your opinions with actual facts rather than the poppycock you guys have come up with.

I think it does make them feel better. I guess there's a lot of disappointment with GO's injuries that manifests itself as rage with some people. I just don't get it, but different strokes for different folks.

I actually think that there's a perception that Oden said something and/or a perception of how he was/is/said he'd be... but the evidence is very scant to support that perception. It goes back, seemingly, to a single article that Quick wrote that other outlets spun. First-hand evidence is ambiguous, at best, and I don't think that it's enough to support the perception.

It's just that people are treating Oden like he's Shawn Kemp or Darius Miles, people who clearly didn't give a crap about getting healthy. This guy has had a Sisyphian beginning to his career and he just keeps rolling the rock up the hill without complaint. He hasn't given up, so I find little to complain about with him.

You and I are on the same page here, I think. I'm upset (sad) not upset (mad). I still have some hope, though... it's more fun that way. And it doesn't really cost (me, at least) anything...

how many psychology terms can you learn from dr phil? never once grasped the point this whole time.

and your selective listening (or reading, i guess) is fantastic. the conspiracy theory you and klinky will write should be awesome.

Max, are you serious? The fact that he has had 3 major NON contact injuries does not provide 100% proof that it's not Odens fault. 3 of them just raises more questions in the opposed direction. Oden is seriously going to get that "unlucky" 3 times in a row, and it is no fault to him on any part? His training/diet/lifestyle/anything have no influence on frequency of injuries?

You keep sending links that refer to the SAME FREAKING ARTICLE.

I don't know what you read from Oden that supports your position. Please show ACTUAL ODEN QUOTES that are given to more than one media source.

If you already have? I will definitely apologize. I am reasonably sure everything other than the Yahoo column was merely a blog restatement of a single Quick article, and the Yahoo guy was writing about Roy and didn't have any quotes about Oden.

lol. Deleted. im butthurt that oden isnt living up to his #1 pick status and youre butthurt that someone has anything bad to say about oden. sorry but blazers>oden imo.

one of my links was from feb 2009, so i doubt it referenced the quick article written in late 2010. author says he has not seen it but it has heard from various places that oden is partying a lot. seems as though that is his reputation to many. but klinky tells me its a conspiracy.

and as earlier posted, of course i dont expect oden to say he drinks/partys too much because 1) its going to get blown out of proportion by media and 2) nobody admits that unless they are in hollywood. so while i have no reason to distrust oden, maybe he doesnt know what amount is too much drinking for an elite athlete (see vince young)

I'm sorry I missed the Feb 2009-dated article.

In the absence of any real evidence, I will continue to think that Oden is like most 23 year-olds, rather than someone who is a problemed drinker.

Your 2009 link was to here, where Jason Quick is quoted as saying he has no evidence on Oden excessively partying & the team doesn't appear to be concerned.

Your second link : http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2010/09/greg-oden-drinking-30-pounds/1

Was a poorly quoted article based off of http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2010/09/blazers_insider_greg_odens_min.html.

Your third link http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-blazersinjuries11810 was by Adrian Wojnarowski, who referenced no sources for his accusation and occurred approx 3 weeks after Quick's article.

Who's coming up with conspiracy theories again?

Are most 23 year olds playing in the NBA? Or number 1 draft picks? Guys like LA, Roy and others on the team don't drink at all during the season and some even during the off season. I can tell you what, if I was in pro sports I would be all about my diet and health. There is plenty of time tO party and drink after your career is over. The last thing I would ever want to do is consume alcohol and other toxic substances for my body when I am rehanging and trying to get back to health and back in shape. Seems quite counter productive to me.

Jason Quick?

What are you talking about? You're the one using an article that's quoting Quick as saying the opposite of what you & the article are trying to convey.
