Greg Oden cleared at "end of summer" for basketball activities

How close is Oden to returning to the court?

"He is basically following the orders of the doctors. That is what he has to do. Right now they are not allowing him to do anything on the floor, that won't be for awhile. It will probably be towards the end of the summer before he is allowed to run again. It's important to listen to the doctors and trainers and follow their instructions... Get your weight down, work on the diet, because you can't do as much on the floor... Once he gets to the floor, I think he's going to be OK.

"This game is difficult for the big guys, if you look throughout the league, you look at Yao [Ming], you look at [Andrew] Bynum, the only big guy that has been healthy for seasons has been Dwight Howard... This game is a lot faster than it used to be and they have fallen during the course of the season.

"He's doing what he needs to do to get back on the floor, we cross our fingers and we pray that when he gets out there he will be able to make it through the season."

So it seems maybe we might have a Oden next season. I'm crossing my fingers!

If he can't start doing floor stuff until the end of the summer, and given his history of being a fairly slow healer, then that tells me he might be ready to play in an actual NBA game sometime in December ... taking into account the lockout of course. This also assumes that he doesn't suffer any more setbacks.

Yeesh.

Q.O. ... no play ... UFA

I'd be shocked if this doesn't happen.

This is the only thing GO could do that would make me think he is classless and hope he doesn't succeed wherever he goes.

If he does this it tells me two things. He's a brilliant business man (or is receiving brilliant business advice) and he wants to get the fuck out.

Scardy cats

I fully expect Oden to be starting 2012, and full form for the playoff's! After all thats all I care about. Look at Udonis Haslem comin back, Beastin! Well worth the wait. If we had G Oden this year we would be in Dallas' place right now

And I'm sure there are robot housekeepers and flying cars in this parallel universe you reside in. As for the rest of us living in this universe there are other "realities" facing Greg and this team.

For sake of argument, let's assume Oden is 100% healthy by the end of 2011.

He won't have played basketball in TWO years. The odds of him being able to shake off all that rust and contribute is almost nil.

Shush you.

I think Oden sitting out another year will lower his value. If he comes back and shows any sign of dominate defensive play for a sustained period, he is looking at a max contract.

The fact he risk injury by playing is something that most clubs already know and should expect. If he gets hurt again, what does it do but cement in what everyone already thinks. He plays most of a season without getting hurt, he can write his own ticket.

If I'm his agent I tell him to go have a kick ass year.

Plus, he still hasn't shown that he can consistently produce in this league. His rookie year was pretty much a mess. Early last season, he could still hardly ever stay in the game longer than 3 minutes without picking up 2 quick fouls. He was JUST starting to figure it out before he broke his patella. He had the great game against Chicago and the 20 rebounds against Miami, but we have no idea if he was going to do that consistently or just revert back to being a non-factor.

Greg was never a "non-factor".

Back to OP. If end of the Summer he's going to be cleared for basketball activity, why are some of you saying he won't be ready to play until December? He obviously won't be cleared for basketball activity if the patella hasn't healed. But if it is, do really think he'd need 4 or 5 months more to get out on the floor?

Not sure if he'll 'need' it, just being generous and giving him some time to get back into the Groove, after all this is the NBA. We've come this far without him, No point in rushing him back.

Pretty much a non factor this night. Couldn't stay on the floor. Only grabbed two rebounds. No blocks. 33% shooting. And a loss.

I was at that game in OKC when I was visiting family

OKC arena is nice, but it has absolutely no leg room. I couldn't feel my legs in the 2nd half because it was so cramped.

I also suspect they pump in crowd noise. It was loud and yet it sounded nothing like the Rose Garden does. A different kind of noise.

man I can't wait for a decision to be made regarding Greg. Although, I'm certain I'll get quickly bored with the posts that will surely follow. "Why did they sign that Bust to a contract so big?" if they sign him and "man, they let Greg go for nothing! Revenge of the KPEE!" if they don't.

And oddly enough, some of those posts will be made by the same people, regardless of the outcome.

I NEED SOME FUCKING GREG ODEN IN MY LIFE MOTHERFUCKERS.

I consider myself a unapologetic, blind faith Oden fan boy...but I too would completely write him off and lose all respect in this scenario

Hmm if Indiana makes KP there Vice GM to take over for bird after next year and they offer a max contract to Oden then that will really be revenge of KP.

He has to be cleared for basketball activities at some point. It's the only way he can get injured again.

The pressure on Oden to perform in Indy would be overwhelming, especially if the Pacers have to overpay for him. It would be a worse situation than Portland, IMO, since it is Greg's hometown, and he would be in the spotlight at all times.

I think some of you are not realizing that Oden had his surgery only in late November.

Given the general 1 year recovery time, I think this estimate is quite generous.
