Zombie Greg's playing

Yeah this is a case of the boxscore acting weird. He got the closest thing to two blocks.

Shot altering is what matters on D. ;]

Shame on you guys for rooting against him, the guy is a ROLE player now he's not going to carry any of you to a title so it doesn't matter. He barely plays as it is, I wonder if he'll hold up even now, playing 4 minutes every two weeks. It is a victory for him to do anything. And I saw the injury issues coming, I wouldn't have taken him #1 with his previous issues at Ohio State.

Greg did the one thing that will make any fan base turn on them, and that is say any type of disparaging remarks about the city that embraced him, and stuck by him.

His "previous issues" at OSU, were a broken wrist.

Exactly. It's almost as if the NBA and the rest of the league thinks Portland dumped on him constantly, and he's a victim of the Trail Blazers and the Trail Blazer fans of mistreating him.

Hell, I doubt there would be another franchise in the league that would've stuck by him after 3 microfactures, alcoholism, the nude picture, the knee-cap explosion and constant swelling and delaying of his return.

Hell, Andrew Bynum did far more on the court than Oden did, and he was vilified by many Laker fans.

It's very easy for Miami (and the rest of the league/NBA) to make Greg out to be a hero, because they didn't invest millions into him, didn't draft him over arguably one of the best players to come into the league in 15 years AND then have to hear about how white the city is, how boring it is for "rich black men" to be entertained/do anything, or that it's somehow the city's fault for his depression.

Greg passively accepted responsibility for his issues, but tried to pass it off on others.

Ridiculous. I get so freaking pissed when I read posts like this. It's like fans here think Greg injured himself on purpose. Where you get that Greg blames the city of Portland for anything is beyond me.

I probably can't find a quote of Oden saying bad things about Ptd, but having watched/obsessed over him the past 4 yrs, he never really embraced the city, never really tried. I got the impression he didn't much care for Ptd and wanted to leave the first chance he got. I will write it off to being young and battling injuries and alcoholism . . . but like Oden with Ptd, I have no love loss when it comes to Oden.

And here we have a post stating that Greg is an alcoholic. Another supposed "fact" with little proof. I realize that Greg stated something along the lines of "I probably became an alcoholic" when he was depressed from his injuries, but I don't believe he's ever been officially diagnosed as an alcoholic. Has he ever been in trouble with the law due to an alcohol-related incident? I don't think so.

It's a lonely fight, brother.

Did I say that he injured himself on purpose? No. I said that a fanbase still embraced him after all that he did, and that it was unlikely many other (or any other) fanbase would continue to support him.

As for him blaming the city, did you not read that grantland interview?

"For starters, Portland isn't a great city to live in if you're a young, African American male with a lot of money," Greg explained with an embarrassed grin. "But that's especially true if you don't have anybody to guide you. Since I was hurt the entire season, I was on my own a bunch and didn't have veteran teammates around to help me adapt to the NBA lifestyle."

That's passively accepting responsibility, not actually accepting responsibility.

So, you're only an alcoholic if you have trouble with the law?

And since when does it have to be "officially diagnosed"? My sister in an alcoholic, but she's never been "officially diagnosed"

So since your sister is an alcoholic you know Greg is an alcoholic? Really?

I don't think people throw around that word just for fun.

What is it exactly you want him to accept responsibility for?

What is it exactly you want him to accept responsibility for?

He made the choices to drink, he made the choices to come back early, he made the choices to not endear himself to the franchise/fans. He's an adult, he made the choices that impacted his life. It's not the teams fault he got injured, it's not the teams fault he didn't have a succesfull career here.

If he had said something to the effect of "you know, I was immature, and foolish. I made poor choices, and it reflected poorly on myself." and never once tried ot make it out to be something about how "white" Portland is, it would've been a huge difference.

Greg Oden failed because of Greg Oden's knees and Greg Odens choices. No one elses.

*facepalm*

Are you even reading julius' s posts? Cause you're not responding intelligently. You seem y too be trying to ignore reality for some weird reason. Julius is stating truths.

I have been out lots of time an seen Greg out in dt Portland. One time he was stumbling down the street with his Cain he was so wasted. Alcohol we a problem for him there is no doubt. I never see any of the current blazers out. Doesn't mean they aren't drinking but it was like Greg didnt give a fuck people saw him out partying when he was supposed to be trying to get better.

Oh wait I've seen victor claver out once... Party animal

I think you're hurt and just looking for reasons to hate Greg Oden, which by the way is fine. Greg was only able to play if the team let him, so you saying it was Greg's choice to come back early is wrong. That's on the team, just as it was on the team to check him out physically/medically prior to the draft and choose to draft him instead of Durant, just as it was on the team to help him rehab. And I think he did try, and for awhile succeed, to endear himself to the fans. It just didn't work out. It's not like Oden sabotaged his rehab (and therefore his career) because he hated it here.

At the end, both sides felt the same way, it was just time to move on. I can't blame either side for that.

For every quote you can find of Greg Oden saying "Portland isn't a great city to live in if you're a young, African American male with a lot of money", I can find one like "He feels bad for Portland and the team, more than anything, more than he did for himself," Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., said Friday. "He felt he could have made an impact, and he knows they were counting on him."

Maybe it's insecurity, but I don't know why some of you get so defensive about any comment that slights Portland. If you got drafted and were a rich, african american athlete, is Milwaukee where you want to go? Minnesota? Utah? And if you endured 4 years of rehab and failure in the city, wouldn't you want to move on too? That doesn't mean you hate the fans and all they did for you. I don't require everyone who plays for Portland to love it more than home and to live here during the offseason. Who cares? All it does is underscore how accurate it is when people say it's like being in a fishbowl when you play for Portland. Every single thing you say or do becomes a multipage thread on some message board.

I just don't think his body is cut out for the rigors of an 82 game season and I don't think that has anything to do with alcohol or not rehabbing properly. I could be wrong, remains to be seen how successful his comeback will be.

Repped.

Oden didn't embrace Portland? Neither does Aldridge. He's not here all summer. He has no camps for kids. He doesn't donate big bucks like Damon Stoudamire.

Why does a player have to embrace his city? It's just a repeat from 10 years ago of the overscrutiny of off-court behavior. The "off-court critics" now would have been the same group then.

"Portland isn't a great city to live in if you're a young, African American male with a lot of money"
I believe wholeheartedly that Greg intended this to mean "Portland isn't an easy city to stay sober in if you're a young, depressed, immature, unsupervised African American male with a lot of money."

very true

And I wholeheartedly believe that Portland is not a fun city for a African American with a little money to spend, nothing racist but Portland is a White city. There are no Hip Hop clubs worth anything and the only places that play it are strip clubs.

I can't really blame Greg for feeling that way, but I agree his response was immature. I blame the Trail Blazers organization as a whole for not giving him good guidance. Funny he's got a great shot at a ring this year, it's too bad it wasn't with us.

I think a lot of the blame lies with the Trailblazers Organization.
They lucked out against all odds, securing the rights to draft a once in a decade true center, and all we see, looking back in hindsight, is a giant cluster fuck of mismanagement and ineptitude on both parties counts.

First it's 'Pristine' knees and then Dance Dance revolution injury - my ass - the whole mismanagement of Oden has stunk from day 1.

Yet Kevin Durant, from Washington, DC, has no issues living in Oklahoma City.

Yes, it's all Portland's fault. It's not at all the fault of St. Greggers wanting to party like a rock star. He should be fun to watch in Miami as the season progresses.
