That's up for debate. Miles was not the property of any team when PDX tried to claim him, and Miles would have been paid for the rest of the season. I'm not sure how this circumvents the cap when other moves that are clearly made only for financial reasons are allowed by the NBA.
I'm kind of glad it worked out the way it did. Sure Portland lost some cap space, but I don't like the alternatives.
Fact: Even though Miles is risking knee replacement surgery, he is playing meaningful minutes and continues to do so even after "screwing" Portland. The guy can play NBA basketball and has better stats than many members of the uniformed Blazers.
If Portland claims Miles, he either sits on the bench pissing and moaning, or he is exiled from Portland and the whole league talks about how wrong it is for the Blazers to not allow him a chance to play for the entire season making it a point of distraction for the entire team. It also could lead to the temptation of overpaying a FA, so you could have a negative image, bad karma, and a bloated contract.
I think Memphis taking Miles and actually playing him may actually be a good thing in the long run.
Miles shoots literally every time he touches the ball, doesn't matter where he is. When does his contract end already?
I went to the movies and saw The Wrestler last night. Broken down Darius "Ram Jam" Miles can't quit the game, the game is going to have to quit on him. His perseverance is both admirable and sad as everyone can see the wheels have come off. Hopefully he's enjoying his last trots up and down the court. For those who say Miles is playing well, I wonder how many have actually watched him play? More likely, those people just check the box scores.
When I see him play, it's painful to me. I remember how effortlessly he used to glide up and down the court. Now he labors like Shawn Kemp in his time as a Blazer. He runs like I used to before I gave up the ghost and admitted to myself that the pain I was feeling in my knee was real and wasn't going away.
He's putting up nice numbers, but he's cherry picking on offense and makes Travis Outlaw look like Steve Nash. When Darius gets the ball in his hand, he shoots it. There's a reason when you look at +/- numbers in the box score, Darius' are almost always the largest negative.
I think Train dumps him after this 10 day deal ends.
Right before they signed Miles to the first 10-day contract, they were on a 4 game winning streak, seemingly finding a way to use their youth to their advantage. However, after signing him, Memphis has gone 2-18. Miles record in games that he has actually played in is 1-8. His lone win while playing was when he registered just a bit over 1 minute and registered straight 0s across the statline.
lolThe curse lives on.
Ever since Miles set foot on the court in a Grizzlies uniform, nothing good has happened for that pathetic franchise.
Their losing streak is now 11 games. Tonight's loss was by double digits to the lowly OKC Thunder. Since putting Miles on the court, they've gone from a young team with promise to the laughing stock of the league. They're not just losing, they're losing to bad teams by double digits. Their average margin of defeat over the past 11 games is 13.2 points, and 7 of their 11 losses have been to sub-0.500 teams.
They better cut Miles loose soon, or they may not win another game the rest of the season.
Fear the curse.

Anyone notice their record since they've signed him? Saw this over at blazers edge
He's not helping them win any games.

Miles will remain for the season
Darius Miles’ comeback trail will continue to blaze through Memphis.
The Grizzlies plan to re-sign the 6-9 veteran forward for the rest of this season after a couple of 10-day contracts, according to a team insider with knowledge of the negotiations. Miles’ second 10-day stint expired after Wednesday night’s loss at Oklahoma City.
But Miles, 27, is expected to sign Friday in time to practice with the team. The Grizzlies’ roster is at the NBA-minimum 13 players. The Griz would have two weeks to add a player had they passed on Miles, who has shown he’s more than serviceable as a backup power forward and center since December when he joined the team.
The only question with regard to keeping Miles centered on playing time. With center Darko Milicic due back from a broken right hand next week, the Griz are committed to four players up front: Milicic, Marc Gasol, Darrell Arthur and Hakim Warrick.
The Griz, though, will let the distribution of minutes work itself out. They like what they’ve seen from Miles, who is making a respectable return from a microfracture knee operation that doctors once deemed career ending.
In another development… rookie center Marc Gasol celebrates his 24th birthday today.

Chris Wallace must want to be fired.
Signing Darius or not signing him does absolutely nothing to Chris Wallace's life expectancy as the Grizz GM. There is no denying however that Miles can still play a little ... even if that is only at a Shavlik Randolph level.

Miles has a 19.6 PER this year.
Of course it's in limited minutes, but that's pretty damn good.

Wasn't this supposed to be the test for whether Memphis was signing Miles in good faith? So don't they pass?
