Drum Roll please.....

The Sporting News selects....

Bill Walton.

I'm not sure of their source, but I found the result surprising enough to make a thread about it.

I give up. Who does the Sporting News think is the Blazers all-time favorite player?

Walton makes the most sense to me. But I actually voted Drexler, because I thought that's what they (and the younger fan base) would think. I'm moderately surprised.

Time heals all wounds. I'm sure most voters were remembering Walton's contributions on the court during that magical championship season, not the acrimonious way he parted company with the team. BTW, I was there the night they retired Walton's number. He got a huge standing ovation and was very gracious in his speech. He has spoken fondly many times of his years in Portland and still seems to like the city. Of those on the list, he seems the most logical choice (to me).

Guess I'll play.

May not be Clyde but I think whoever it is was on that team.

BG all the way!

I voted for Sheed. Both teams played hard.

My favorite Blazers were Geoff Petrie then Bobby Gross. Followed by Walton then Sabonis. Had a soft spot for Lloyd Neal and Maurice Lucas.

I'm too old to have new favorites.

I'm sorry, what was the question?

Ha! Exactly, the Original Blazer (and the best shooter to play in Portland) and the continuous motion man of the Champions.

Agree--I started becoming aware of basketball in 1984, and even then Walton either didn't talk publicly about (or was decently gracious toward) Portland. It took until later to read about the acrimony during the injury time.

Then again, most people today (even Blazer fans) don't know who David Halberstam is.
