Hateful anti-gay laws passed in Russia

The US has capitulated to Russia's attack on gays by removing Tyson Gay from the roster.

GOD, I did not mean to imply that, for example, you thought the Nazi laws were OK as long as they just applied to German Jews. I was just pointing out what looked to me like the final logic of your position. Thank you for your clarification. I agree we need to pick our battles; no one has time or energy enough to fight every injustice, although at least we can be aware of them. It just so happens that to me this is a battle I choose to fight. I don't know if a vodka boycott will have real economic impact; probably not, but what it is doing is raising awareness of the issue. So it is "working" in that sense.

Several Dutch journalists were jailed and then expelled from Russia when they tried to interview a gay activist for their home newspaper.

It is reported that in Russia gangs of thugs are finding gay males, primarily teen boys, on social media sites, setting up what the young men think are social meetings, then beating, torturing them, drenching them in urine and posting videos of the attacks. Although the attackers' faces are clearly visible in the videos, they are operataing with impunity from (and possible in cahoots with) the Putin government.

Sounds like a groovy place to watch a sporting event, doesn't it?

For some reason, I just don't really hear much about this. Now that I know and have looked, there is a ton of articles on the topic, but for some reason I missed most the first time around. I hope boycotting vodka or just posting on forums like this are able to spread the news and get more people involved. I don't know what result that will have, but over time I suspect only positives will come from increased awareness. Those who follow it closely, please keep posting and help me and other stay current.

Is it "being Gay" to boycott the Olympics because the Russian follow the teachings of their church?

Russian laws are enacted by their government, which does not in any way support the Russian Orthodox Church or any other church, nor does it acknowledge the existence of any super-being other than Putin.

This guy believes none of his country's athletes are gay. This is exactly why it is important for famous people to come out. It's hard in Russia but the gay athletes need to stand up and be counted and say we are gay and we are Russian. It's hard to legislate against gays when they are people you know and respect.

The leftist liberal Soviet Union was overthrown to enable religion. So now it's a crime to insult religion. The rock group Pussy Riot is in prison for doing so.

The West, which overthrew the atheist system and installed the pro-religion regime, now pretends to be aghast at the results.

Western intelligence replaced secular governments with anti-gay religious ones. In order: Afghanistan, Soviet Union, Iraq, Libya, and now Syria. Putin is preventing the rape of Syria. Mercenaries gathered by the West would have killed a lot more by now, not to mention the West bombing Syria to pieces as they did Libya. Putin is the good guy on Syria.

I agree with trying to change Russian anti-gay laws. How about gays investigating gay life in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, too? It won't happen. That wouldn't be congruent with government foreign policy.

Here is a http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/russians-are-using-social-media-to-lure-in-and-publicly-humi link to the attacks in Russia. Some are even shown on TV. As entertainment. These are shocking images, warning you. And when hate laws are passed they lead to hate crimes.

If a government of any country said they could not guarantee the safety of, say Christian athletes and fans and journalists, or Jewish, or Black - would there be any question about holding the Olympics there? Or if they went further and said Christian athletes, fans or media would be subject to arrest during the Olympics?

Not just gays any more. The director of a museum was fired from his job for refusing to censor a poster critical of Russia in the Olympics. The director had previously been attacked and the museum trashed by the same skinheads who now target gays, because he is Jewish.

Somewhat OT.

Putin made a fool of Obama last time they met. Obama had an agenda, like to get Russia to help bomb the fuck out of Syria, and Putin didn't budge.

Obama isn't going to meet with him at the G20 because they gave Snowden sanctuary. No mention of human (gay) rights.

W had his issues with Putin, too. Coalition of the unwilling. But handled it very differently.

On a similar note, the president came here to San Diego to speak at Camp Pendleton yesterday. What a frosty reception he got.

I saw the whole thing start to finish on C-SPAN last night.

The guy behind him over his left shoulder looked like he was trying not to fall asleep during the 25 minute long lecture. His speech clearly had stopping points where he expected applause but got none. There was even one time where it took one of those one guy slow clapping to get a response from the crowd.

When it was over, he turned his back on the audience and politely clapped for the guys behind him. No salutes. No handshakes.

When the C-SPAN camera panned out, it looked like there were maybe 50 guys on stage and another 50 in the audience.

Denny please do not turn this into another tea party thread. There are plenty of them. It is belittling what is going on in Russia (and elsewhere).

No, it isn't belittling.

Crandc complaining on a message board carries only slightly less clout than the president who could meet face to face with the guy who signed the law you complain about.

This is what George Takei posted before he posted the above picture:

Obama needs to take a stand.

Obama won't do shit. You guys voted him in thinking we are gonna have some sort of change. He just told you what he knew you wanted to hear so you vote for him. Now you get to see just how much he lied to you. Enjoy...

Exactly... This has nothing to do with a party, but of a leader that doesn't have the balls to make a stand. To give of the promises he made to those that voted for him. Instead, he got into office and is only focused on the agendas he had from the start. And ironically, it's not for gay rights.
