Should we make a win-now trade for someone like Love or Griffin?

I think they need to get closer to 500 record wise by the break so it sort of is time to have a winning stretch...I think it's a confidence builder ….the players need a win as much as the record needs one
Ok, that still doesn’t make it a “must win”

we could easily lose next game or two and be fine 5 months from now. We’re not even 1/5 of the way through the season.

Whiteside and Bazemore for Thompson and Love works on the ESPN Trade Machine!

sure, but I never go into a game expecting to lose....I appreciate Kingspeeds posts about "must wins"....I understand that sentiment for the reasons I mentioned...I think the players are probably saying the same thing....win one with Melo! I have a much harder time reading..."we have to tank so lose this game" …...which has been sort of a theme this season...rest Dame for the year crap...so we can get LaMelo to play with Melo. I don't even think about the lottery this time of year myself

I think when everyone is healthy we already have a contender. Not that this means that much, but the clippers are considered a contender and the blazers played them well and barely lost, in LA, without Collins and Nurk. Already we’ve seen stretches (e.g. spurs game) where we’ve looked dominant.

if we can make a trade for younger players that we don’t use for a veteran then I’m all for it. I would even do something like Nas or Ant for Blake Griffin. But I don’t think trading veterans like CJ who have years of chemistry for some allegedly “better” player with our team is a good idea, at all.

It's going to be Baz and Hassan if they make a move...both are expiring and have huge value in a trade for cap reasons. They can get a needle mover because of that...rookies aren't going to get an all-star who moves the needle....maybe as filler but Hassan and Baze have big expiring deals

Would you consider Danilo Gallinari or Otto Porter Jr. needle movers?

not really....I could be wrong about Otto...I don't know his game that well. Gallinari doesn't move the needle for me though ...he can shoot...we have Melo to do that..

Not to my needle, but someone else’s probably.

I think Porter would be. A career 40% 3-point shooter with a 7'1 1/2" winspan who can defend multiple positions. Could stand to put on more weight/strength but in the perfect age range for Dame.

relative return.
If still trying to win, then every game they lose, they must work that much harder just to get back to where they were before they lost.

let me explain in business terms.

lets say my company makes 10% profit on selling a product. We sell the product at $10 a pc and we sell in 1000pc cases. So each case is $10,000.
The profit is $1000.00 or the gain.

now lets saw my company scrapped a case. We now have to sell 10 more cases just to make up the $10,000 for the one case. Thats JUST to get back to even. No money gained. If the Blazers really still want to win and be relevant in the playoffs, every game is a must win game at this point. They have to go on a six game win streak just to get back to par. By then a quarter of the season is over.

Do you think we can go on a six game win streak?
Its possible but clips on the road and sac will be tough.
Anyhow, i believe your logic to be flawed, unless you are cool with slithering into a 7 or 8 seed and getting stomped in the first round and losing out on a lottery pick in the process.

me? Not so much...

Nope! Never stop! One really good piece that fits well could put this team on a roll. It's a long season. Look what Kanter did for them last year?

The Clippers didn’t have Paul George in that game either.

Have you seen the Spurs record? They looked dominant against them because the Spurs are terrible this year. One of the few teams that are worst than the Blazers.

Do you have any understanding of trade mechanics and salaries? Blake Griffin makes $35M and Ant and Naz make $2M each.

Melo should only be viewed as a stunt signing to distract from our crappy record. He has no role on a healthy team, as he has proved for the past five years of his career.
This is wrong. In the year he was out he worked very hard. He obviously stayed in very good shape. he transformed his body to play a little different style. Melo is a piece that if used correctly can contribute. I have seen enough in the two games to see he can contribute to this team. Right now he is doing more because they need him. But you get this roster back and Melo could be a very good part of it.

Sure: with the team currently decimated by injuries, he does have a role. We don't have enough scorers and he's not keeping the ball from someone better (like Dame)... except:

Problem with this is you have picked one possession against arguably the most dominant player in the league. Same scenario 10 times? How many times does he score? If you say anything more than 4 times it was worth a shot. If you think he can't score there 4 times out of ten you are fooling yourself.
Now do it 10 times against lets say Aldridge, Aminu, Meyers Leonard? Griffin?

With the way Skal has played on both sides of the floor, I'd definitely be for a Whiteside for Blake Griffin, Otto Porter Jr, or Danilo Gallinari trade. Start Skal and then go sign Noah or Faried (if possible) to be our backup C.
I just don't see it at all. Skal seems weak, slow and confused out there. Maybe he can improve?

Fact is, I like skal. I just dont think he’s anywhere relatively close to ready to start if the goal is trying to win.
This is what i am seeing also.
Does fine against second and third string but starters take him out of the game.

Yeah i think you have either Melo or Gallinari. Not both.

Well, what he seems like to you isnt actually how he is.
Well the whole team looks confused so there is that. Its at the point where I just laugh and roll my eyes when 2-3 Blazers are pointing at the guy who just scored off a wIde open shot or dunk, like who’s guy was that...

A "win now" trade would be foolish unless it helps us in the future, too... in which case it's not really a "win now" trade. Just a good trade. Haha.

I don't think we should blow anything up in terms of our core, though.

We need to rebuild our bench for next year and we hopefully will add another solid (or better) prospect in the draft and give it another shot next year.

You got it right. Squandering an asset for a one-season "win now" piece IMO would be dumb for this season. Now if we either decide to trade CJ at the deadline or trade for another "piece" that will be here for the next 2-4 yrs after this then I am fine with that. For me its all about the next 2-4 yrs after this when all our key guys are healthy and can play together. A 7 or 8th seed IMO this yr is meaningless, if we get there by playing better as the season goes on then great, but wasting an asset for a 1 yr rental of a guy like Gallo IMO is just not worth it.

I've never been into the Otto Porter Jr thing that other Blazer fans have been. That's why I said he'd move other people's needles. I just don't think he's that good, and he is paid like he is really, really good.

I think we've found the words for Ed's headstone.

We’re done this year. No trade necessary.

I’m sure you can dig up some plays where he does some good things. I’m even more certain I can dig up twice as many that have him behind on rotations (slow), getting pushed around (weak), and out of position (confused). So maybe he actually is how he seems to me? Just a thought?
