Haynes: Brook Lopez sees his brother Robin Lopez as a great fit in Portland

NEW YORK – Although Brooklyn Nets All-Star center Brook Lopez sat out last night’s 108-98 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers to deal with an ankle injury, he still took time out to speak with a hometown reporter (yours truly) about the impact his twin brother Robin Lopez has had in Portland.

“You know it’s been a short span, but obviously it has been going great,” Lopez told CSNNW.com. “It’s definitely a relationship that works out very well for both parties. He’s loves the city, loves the fans and loves the people he’s playing with. It’s probably the best situation he’s been in as a professional.”

Lopez’s defensive presence in the middle for Portland is well-documented. It’s more than just his 1.4 blocks per game, it’s the way in which he alters shots and clogs up the middle. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time.

Statistically, he’s not going to wow you, though he’s rebounding (7.3) at a career-high mark. It’s the intangibles he brings. That’s why LaMarcus Aldridge went on record to say this is the most comfortable he’s felt in his career from the frontcourt on the defensive. He knows he’s able to be more aggressive, take more chances, trusting that Lopez will have his back.

In Brooklyn, Brook has his own issues to deal with as his team struggles to locate some chemistry and rhythm. Yet, he religiously checks the stats after games to see how his younger brother (older by a minute) is doing out there on the left coast.

“I follow him a ton,” he said. “I’m glad to see that the team and he is doing well. He fits what they needed and the team wants to be successful and so does Robin. I couldn’t be more happier for him.”

The first battle between the Lopez twins with Robin in Portland almost occurred. Brook said he’s almost gave it a go last night. He really wanted to go up against his brother and vice versa.

When asked if there is ever trash talking between the two when they match up, Brook said yes, but not from them.

“All of our boys like talking trash to each other,” he said. “We don’t really talk trash to one another, but you know David [Lozano, a childhood friend from Fresno, Calif.] and all those guys are talking it up. Me and Robin just have fun with it
