Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

so we have 3 days to make an uneven trade?

Do we? Isn't there some new provision that says if a team signs our player to an offer that our money to match is tied up also?

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

Anyway, this is a pretty aggressive move on Batum's part. I mean, ideally he'd sit tight for a few weeks on this offer and allow Portland to use our cap space on other deals first. But I guess he's using Minnesota the same way Hibbert used us to force the issue.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

I think we should have executed a sign and trade. Now our options are either overpaying Nic or letting him walk for nothing.

If we match, I sure hope he steps up his game because he hasn't performed at an 11.5M / year level.

Look at other contracts around the league that were signed this year. He has matched those players output.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

That's all ya got Kahn? LOL Blazers match, yeah he's overpaid a couple mil per but ya have to match IMO.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

OK lets for argument sake assume Neil matches. What should our next move be? Sounds like he tried hard with Kaman. (Per Kaman's quotes) Who do we target in the next few days?

We would have 2.21 or something like that to spend

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

by the way and news on whether that 46.5 mil is what he "could earn" with incentives or it's just a straight 4 yrs and 46.5 mil?

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

I re-looked at the numbers, and I'm coming around to the contract. He's only 24, and he's really a 16ppg guy if given 36 mpg. He hits 3's at a 40% clip, and he's a good (if overrated) defender.

He's been used as a 30 mpg guy, but I don't know that it's his fault. He never looks gassed--I think it was mostly Nate using him conservatively because he's young.

With Lillard creating off penetration and Aldridge doing his thing, this may be the year when Batum takes that next step.

...and he doesn't want to play for Portland.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

so if he got a max-raise, max-bonus offer, his cap hits would be:
$10,963,436.77
$11,404,478.92
$11,845,521.08
$12,286,563.23

and his salaries:

$14,450,937
$10,241,979
$10,683,021
$11,124,063

oh god, how many years have we been waiting for Nic to take "that next step". he just isn't the player you want him to be. 11.5 is way too much, let him walk. he's not worth it.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

I have us at 5,665,289 left to spend. What am I missing? I have the 6 contract vets, the 2 1strounders at 120% scale, Barton with the rookie min, Claver and Freeland's signings, Hickson at 4M...and SWill's stretch. That leaves 5.2M (with the roster hold that would go away if we signed someone, so effectively 5.6M)

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

btw...has anyone other than Haynes confirmed this yet?

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

My calcs, assigning 11M to Batum and 4M to Hickson, assuming we renounce rights to Przybilla and the Rhino, put our current commitments for 12/13 at just over 50.9M. We should still have about 7M in cap room after we match.

Edit: adding in the extra 20% for the rooks (as mentioned by Brian) takes away about another 1.25M. So yeah, like BFW says, about 5.7M left.

meh, lets see if he can play like he does overseas, he wont be heald back by Nate this year. Its well worth the risk. Besides, give me a player that produces as well, that we could sign and play next season?

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

rudy gay got a max deal coming off a lower PER than batum had last season. who are we hoping to get similar to batum that will be better over the next 4 years for significantly less money?

match that mother.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

It is only a four year deal and we will have alot of rookies for that time. We will not have much else to spend our money on.

There is risk, but I agree. Nic is still young and has shown flashes of very aggressive play, under a far less than optimal coach/system. He can really shoot the three, defend, move the ball, move without the ball, and has the ability to penetrate (if encouraged?). This might be overpaying, but he might step up and this could look like a bargain. Who knows, maybe the money will motivate him to take on a bigger leadership position. If Portland matches then I will be excited that we have some very talented young players. If not, then I will believe that they don't think Nic will ever reach that potential. At 23/24, I'm betting he can still step up and make it look like a bargain.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

This will not be a bargain. 11.5 million per year for a guy that will never make an allstar team or contribute like an allstar.

IGGY. :MARIS61:

I dont know, bud, I dont think we can get him for the same money, even if we pulled the rabbit out of the hat and was able to get him..but, I still like Nic at 23, with no stand in the corner blah game plan
