Nick Nurse and Erik Spoelstra didn't have HC experience before stepping into their current roles. Same thing with Pop in San Antonio. A coach has to start somewhere.

yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with the list. Just wondering about the prevailing opinion that Portland needed and experienced coach

and Nick Nurse and Spoelstra stepped into coaching teams with a hell of a lot more balanced talent that Portland has right now

Nurse stepped into a situation that wasn’t done case of managing superstars. They had Kawhi and outside of that it was about as many role players as it gets. Kind of like our situation

She did coach the Spurs to the Las Vegas Summer League Championship in 2015, with a record of 6-1. The players apparently were very receptive to her coaching style and indicated she was a “player’s coach” and a “firecracker.” She’s definitely worth an interview but I think this is Billups’ job to lose (unless he is offered and accepts the Celtics HC job).

nahh...they had defense all over the court, three two-way wings, two excellent PG's, and a pair of savvy big men. It was a very well balanced roster without any significant holes. The pieces fit together really really well

Portland really doesn't have any of that

What’s a better job, associate head coach in nba or head women’s coach in college

Lillard follows Staley, Billups and Hammon on Twitter.

I think Dawn Staley is a really intriguing candidate...she may have the highest BBIQ of the field...I like all the candidates except for 70 year old D"Antoni

My concern with Staley is making jump from college to pros and from women to men all at once and under intense scrutiny.
Yeah I really don’t think she’s a serious candidate. Hammon makes much more sense. She has been in the league for a while now. She has experience coaching men. She is coming from a team culture of winning and good defense. She’s ready to take the next step.

Over Chauncey Billups and Mike D’Antoni??

Why would Becky take the Portland job when she will replace POP? Change of scenery? Money? or get away from the POP bench mark?

Over Chauncey Billups and Mike D’Antoni??
yeah.....not saying Chauncy doesn't have a great BBIQ as well but MDA is a defensively challenged coach if there ever was one. I think a woman who's achieved what she's achieved is much more difficult than the path Chauncy, Mike or Brent took to get in the biz...she's highly respected in the coaching ranks...has coached the women's Olympic team as well and is in the HOF ....also she's not only female but is black which many people are calling for hiring more black coaches seeing as the coaching ranks have been less than diverse historically. I think she's an interesting candidate and hope she gets a shot over MDA or Jeff Van Gundy ...if not here, then in Orlando..

The majority of women’s college basketball is coached by women..

D’Antoni is one of the most innovate offensive minds in the sport. What has Staley innovated? Genuine question.

what is intriguing, in a political sort of way:

Portland will likely be interviewing 2 women candidates for the job. And they will be interviewing a candidate with that settlement case for alleged abuse of a woman.

does that actually make it harder for Portland to hire Billups, especially considering that both women candidates appear to be highly qualified....as qualified as Billups?

the trailblazers would be hiring the first woman head coach in the NBA.....there are female coaches in the college ranks and WNBA....how many are black women? How many have head coached Team USA for the Olympics?
