I think the only way Spoelstra would come is if he got full power, meaning he’d make decisions in free agency/trades/draft/etc. Olshey would obviously get fired and it’d be an ownership call. I’d be surprised if that happened, but not too much.

Brandon Sprague is not a douche and not a clickbait guy. I listen to their show every day. They are Blazers fans but not at all delusional. Sprague had some fun today fantasizing about Spo, and he does have a reliable source, or rather, as he said, someone he "trusts." He was not click baiting. Good guy.

That being said, Spo would have to be given a Pete Carroll type roll. Not coach/GM, but president of operations/HC, then hires a GM he can work lock-step with.

Hoping for the first time that McGowan might have Vulcan's ear and this leads to something big and Olshey is gone. Listen, Jody Allen knows how they did it with the Seahawks and Carroll and the level of success that has come from that. I would not be surprised if they're working independently of Olshey and that would be great, I think. Again, as long as McGowan has their ear. He can make up for firing Mike and Mike :lol:
 
I don't want the coach and GM/PoBO being the same guy. That's two different jobs. This kinda model has failed pretty much everywhere it's been tried.

I didn't know Spoelstra traded himself for two weeks in order to get a player back. That's crazy.

Spoelstra had his heart set on Don Buse, a 32-year-old point guard with quite the resumè: a 6-time Defensive teamer (in the NBA and ABA), a one-time steals and assists champion, two-time All-Star, and one-time ABA champion. But because Indiana’s money was drying up, they had little future use for him. And here was the deal.

Portland receives: Don Buse

Indiana receives: Portland’s senior Vice President Jon Spoelstra for two weeks.

Spoelstra only needed one week.

Funny enough, the Pacers tried to prevent Spoelstra’s name from actually hitting the public waves. As reported by Sports Illustrated’s Ben Pickman:

“Initially, the NBA kept the details of the deal quiet, omitting Spoelstra’s name from the announcement. But he went off to Indiana anyway, working just a single week with the team. He met with prospective owners and helped Indiana learn more about Portland’s in-house radio success. A 1986 New York Times story also reports that he turned in an 100-page document of suggestions that Spoelstra said at the time “he would have been afraid to try in Portland,” but he has no recollection of that document.”

All told, it proved to arguably be a win-win. Indiana’s franchise survived a crumble, and Portland got its point guard, making the semi-deep runs in the postseason to follow. Much like Erik Spoelstra, his father was largely before his time. He used his sports marketing expertise to push the envelope of the NBA’s viewership. To point out a few:

I guess sometimes I get too optimistic. But we now know that there seems to be a channel of communication possible from McGowan through Spo's dad to Spo. And actually we have been hearing Spoelstra's name for over a week now. Maybe it has some legs.

also maybe Spoelstra would like to have his next gig be in his hometown following a guy that lasted 9 years...and a leader that wants to play in Portland forever...

Asking sincerely, because I can't think of many examples, where all did it fail? I know Pop is coach and PoBO, and I believe Doc Rivers was for the Clippers.
 
A dual roles success pretty much just depends on who the GM would be. There’s no way it should be someone that has no experience working with Spo or isn’t his hire altogether. Olshey would for sure have to leave.

i want the GM out scouting prospects, watching games outside his own, and be continually involved in talks to improve the team.

i want the coach pouring over film and liaising with the stars, and focusing on the daily operations.

the overall vision of the two could be independent.
