What does a player development director do exactly?

It's in the article. It is rather vague though, isn't it?

In his new position with the team, Hawkins, 42, will be a resource to support each player’s professional, social and personal development. He will help build strong relationships with players, their families, agents and business associates. Hawkins will also work closely with Basketball Operations, player representatives and the Trail Blazers’ business departments to help build and maintain strategic partnerships.

I think that is Darnell Valentine's old job.

Yeah. This came out of no where. Interesting. Terry Porter must have not wanted anything to do with such a thing.

More Seattle connections?

While we're at it, why don't we steal Kevin Calabro, and can MB?

That would be a huge step down for Porter but didn't Kersey hold a similar position at one time?

lol. I love Jerome. We as fans and a city made a impression on him years ago. Now he is as loyal as a dog.

I saw him at the Blazer game when they retired Porter's number, I yelled out to him, "your number is next!" (while I loved Kersey I don't think we should retire his number, I just felt like yelling something that I knew would get his attention, lol) Anyway he looked over at me and gave me this huge smile, I almost thought he was going to cry. He may have won a ring with the Lakers he'll always in his heart be a Blazer.

I think they ought to retire his number. And then raise the standard of which you retire a number on.

There isn't a player on the blazer team the earlier part of this decade that I would retire. So I think that affords you the ability to retire Jerome's number.

Really? I'm in the opposite side of this. I feel like we already have too many numbers retired. I remember reading something about us having more numbers retired than any other team sans Boston.

While I loved all of those players, where do you draw the line? Cliff Robinson? Danny Young?

Hersey was one of my favs growing up!

LOL. Danny Young.

No. No. Neither of those. But I think Jerome ought to be honored for what he was. And that was a hard nose, hard working, hustling ball player. He played the game the right way. He might be considered thee ultimate hustle player of all time.

Gotcha. I still think we have too many numbers retired, but to be honest I misread your post which is why I asked about Cliff and Young.

I read, "There isn't a player on the blazer team the earlier part of this decade that I would retire" as "There isn't a player on the blazer team the earlier part of that decade that I wouldn't retire."

I'm not sure how I did that.

Did I say it right? If not, my apology.

All I'm sayin' there is, I wouldn't retire one blazer from the jail blazer era. That includes Pippen. Therefore, I feel we can afford to retire the heart and soul of the blazer team of the early ninties.

Nope you said it right. I misunderstood. I get what you're saying though.

If you retire Kersey I think Duck needs to be retired as well, he was a two-time all star after all. Then you have 4/5 of the starting five for teams that never won a championship. :dunno:

Naw. I personally wouldn't retire Duck. He was good. But Jerome Kersey was top three on that team. And the reason why I'm interested in retiring Jerome has more due to the effort he put forth on the floor. No one hustled like he did. I don't know If I can recall one nba player since Kersey that worked as hard as he did on the court. Maybe ever. Or atleast since I have been watching. Like I said in a previous post. He played the game the right way. If any player did, he did. I feel he should be honored for that. Especially if you are willing to honor players like Johnny Davis, Dave Twardzik etc. They might have won a title. But I don't know they ever brought the effort and heart Jerome did. Jerome was ever bit as good as those two if not better.

I do get what you are saying though on winning championships. That's why I think you retire him and then raise your standard on what it takes to retire a number.

Why the FUCK can't we hire someone that played for Portland? These Seattle connections are really pissing me off. Are they really saying there isn't one single former Blazer that could do that job?

I think Darius Miles is looking for a job and hell, he's still on the payroll. :biglaugh:

I think this organization has been entirely too liberal about retiring numbers. It's almost like they retire numbers out of nostalgia and not actual accomplishments. I loved Terry Porter when he was on our team, but the guy wasn't good enough to have his number retired. I'm surprised we haven't retired the number of every single player that was on the championship team.

HOFers is really where I draw the line. Was the guy amazing? Yes? Okay, retire his number. Jordan's, Drexlers, Pippens, Magics, Stocktons... etc etc etc.

Is there a way to un-retire a number? Because it's really stupid we retired Larry Steele's number.

Translation: He will bail players out of jail.

He will help build strong relationships with players, their families, agents and business associates.

Translation: He will round up the hos, and lie to the wives.

Hawkins will also work closely with Basketball Operations, player representatives and the Trail Blazers’ business departments to help build and maintain strategic partnerships.

Translation: He will warn the brass when the shit is about to hit the fan.
