Hickson is a shade under 6'8"

That trade idea would last exactly this long: "J.J., how would you like to go the the Timberwolves for the rest of the season. No?"

Oh yeah, I forgot that he has right of refusal. Hm. On the other hand, players do like Adelman and playing with Rubio - Batum cited both of those over the Summer (which we've forgiven him for). And he's said to have (a) insisted that he's a PF, and (b) moaned about the coaching staff (at least blamed them for the poor defense last night), so... Maybe he needs to be told that we're going to try starting Leonard and bumping up Freeland's minutes soon...

The amplified version of the discussion would be, "J.J., how would you like to give up your Bird Rights and go the the Timberwolves for the rest of the season. FUCK NO?"

Do we have his Bird rights? Even if we do, he could be informed that the first thing we do is renounce them to clear cap space. This would be true even if we planned to re-sign him (because wasn't that what happened last time?)

Yes, the Blazers do have his Bird Rights. I suppose they could do something like that, but it would really piss J.J. off and wouldn't do much for the Blazers' reputation around the league. Far better to try and do a sign-and-trade next summer.

We have his Bird rights, but his agent knows that if we renounce him to sign a player, there is a provision in the CBA that let's us retain his Bird rights if we don't sign the player we renounced him for.

we can't do a S&T...not for the amount he's going to want/get. It would make him BYC, and you can't involve a 3rd team in a S&T. And in new S&Ts, you only get 4 years max and 4.5% raises anyway, so it's not like he's getting more years or more money,

I just want to throw one thing out there with respect to Hickson's Bird Rights, do they really matter? He's not going to get a five year deal with big money.

You know the more we see Hickson get exposed on Defense, the more I think he's not going to get as big a payday as everyone thinks, especially with the new CBA.

That's a good point, maybe he could be re-signed for a medium contract as a back-up big. But can we get some bigger name at the Center position which pushes out his money?

As I understand it, that's only true if the Blazers are over the cap when they make the trade. If instead of using all of their cap space on FA signings they include Hickson in a deal for a player that they want and make the trade before they go over the cap, then the BYC provisions don't apply.

that's true, but I guess I never looked at it like that. In your scenario, they renounce him and don't sign anyone else to contracts, keeping their space, and then S&T? And then fill in afterward? Yeah, that's possible. Especially since you can still S&T a renounced FA.

Did they change the no 3rd team thing in new CBA?

The last I heard, it was one of the last things dropped. But I haven't looked it up, so you could be right.

Apparently the team measured him at 6'7 5/8" w/o shoes, does he really deserve to get this much hate when he's trying to guard centers every night at his height?

Neil is waiting too long to deal him. His 'D' at the center position is really hurting his value both on the trade market and his next contract.

Have you ever thought that maybe Oshley has been trying to move him and teams just don't want a rental?

The only way it matters is for the Blazers (If we go over cap; we can still give him a contract). Hickson is just using the Bird right's clause to make sure he goes to a team he wants.

Exactly. The way I see it, J.J. could be the key to opening up the Blazers' options this summer to include guys that aren't free agents. Using him in a trade for a center would be ideal.

yeah, but if he was renounced, and there was a 13M non-FA that we wanted, why would a team want to pay JJ, say, 4/36M to trade the 13M non-FA to us instead of just sending a 2nd-rounder and getting a big trade exception?

Because that team doesn't have the cap space necessary to absorb JJ's new contract without sending out some salary? :dunno:
