So based on this...
1) We can't have anything that is gender restrictive, or could be perceived to be gender restrictive.
2) The people who lost are upset and they don't think anyone should have to feel the sting of defeat again.
3) We should only have traditions that elevate all students.
So right off the bat, they need to abolish the student government that made this vote, because that student government is a tradition that elevates only some of the students. It also has a clear winner and a loser, so the losers will have their feelings hurt. We can't have that. So the student government needs to be removed.
Duran, by contrast, said the main case for doing away with the court, made by senior class president Jennifer Mendez and student government adviser Sarah Cole, was that the titles of king and queen were too restrictive for students whose gender identity might be more fluid than fits the titles of king and queen. Duran said opposition from students and families who experienced loss at the ballot box when students chose past kings and queens also played a role. He said the elected student government members considered the issue for perhaps 20 minutes in early September then voted approximately 30-20 in favor of ending the court and royalty.
The written explanation for the change, provided to teachers by Mendez, Cole and the school's top administrators, makes clear that the primary reason they ended the homecoming court was that it anointed a few seniors, "based on ambiguous social criteria and social standing," while they prefer traditions than elevate all students. The desire to be gender inclusive also played a role.
