Hood declining his Player Option

I could see Hood signing an early bird deal which gives him a bump over what he opted out of with a player option for next season. We would then have full bird rights next year and Hood would have insurance plus more money this year. If he is healthy, he would be in probably the best spot to succeed and raise his value.

Having Hood, Trent, and Roco is a very nice luxury.

The emergence of Trent is a factor in my mind. Essentially they are the same size. (same weight and wingspan)
I think Trent is a more willing defender while Hood gets to the paint better. Both shoot the 3 ball well.

I would prefer to keep Hood (if healthy) but we would have Trent to fill the void if not.
Hood was showing signs of being an elite post player this year, albeit with the small sample size. And his 3pt shot from the corner was Seth Curry esque. I would hate to lose him-- think he and Trent are different kinds of players.

I think I'm starting to become okay with giving him like a 3/30 year deal with the third year being a team option. One thing we're missing if any big deals come around is salary filler, since after Dame/CJ, the next two largest contracts we have to deal are Nurk and RoCo, and they're both bargains at 12 million a year. Don't think they would want to include them. Having Hood at 10 million + another guy at the full MLE would give us around 25 million in salary we could match for a star if a deal presented itself. More if we add some of the young guys and Mario.

Yup, we want to keep more tradeable contracts. Think the MLE will be useful in that respect to, so I really hope we don't just pass on that.

Other thing this does is open up lob sided trading. Portland would be 11k under cap, add Collins to get to almost 17k. Makes a good sign and trade deal for one of the better players in this class.

Danilo or Grant anyone?

Agree, but depth is pretty important, we saw it last season. Trent + Hood is better than just Trent

Good call on early bird rights. Thanks all. I feel better about the possibilities now

Rodney is a 2 guard, more than a 3 , IMO. With the emergence of Gary Trent, and Covington's arrival, maybe he feels the writing is on the wall. Love to have Hoody back though.

That could be an option. To pursue that, Portland would loose the rights to Whiteside, Hood, and the ability to use the MLE.

When we renounce whiteside..doesn’t this put us under the cap..?
Portland could get to ~$12M of cap space.

In so doing, Portland would have to renounce the MLE, all TPE, Whiteside, and Hood. After that move, Portland could only fill out the roster with the BAE and minimum contracts.

Not gaining the $3M of cap space (over the MLE) is worth loosing out on the flexibility of the other tools.

***EDIT***
So in re-reading the CBAFAQ.com Portland would loose the BAE as well.

However, apparently Portland could still re-sign Hood, Whiteside, & Melo using the 'non-bird' exception. This allows for a 1-yr deal with a salary starting at up to 120% of his salary in the previous season.

I'd offer him 30/m over 4. That'd be an eminently tradeable deal at any point.

My math could be off, I'm showing us at 98,535,113 with 9 players on the roster. That's waiving all holds. But we'd have to add in 3 roster charges, I believe. Don't have ther exact amount, but let's just say it is 500K, that brings our salary to 100,000,000, which leaves us with cap space equal to the MLE, basically.

(shakes head)

Back when he was healthy he was worth $6 Mil. After an achilles injury and missing pretty much an entire season he thinks he is worth more?? Who was the last player who improved after an achilles injury? Seriously.

I think that's right, tho I'm confused by the requirements. He hasn't played for Portland for 2 years, but apparently he still qualifies?

Rodney's been out for 2 years? Did I miss something?

The requirement for Early Bird rights is playing for a team for 2 seasons. Although I think it's just 2 consecutive seasons, not 2 complete consecutive seasons.

OK, so I misunderstood. I was worried I'd fallen into a rip in the space-time continuum. 2020 and all.

Not necessarily the same team for 2 years.

It's not changing teams as a FA for 2 consecutive seasons. If a player with bird rights is acquired via a trade (say at the trade deadline) - the new team will still have bird rights even if the player was only on the team for 3 months.

I'm sure he always intended to opt out, but after rupturing his achilles? Maybe he wants a longer contract? If I was Olshey I would pack his contract with incentives, so that if he doesn't make them he actually ends up with less than $6M/per.

We absolutely need to re-sign him. I wouldn't expect it to be for much more than 6m per year, but having him signed on for 3 or 4 years would be great for all.
