I wanted to know if the teams with higher payrolls are better than those who aren’t. Every year, are the teams who make the playoffs the higher paid teams than those who don’t?

It doesn’t mean as much as you’d think. Yankees always have a high payroll but they spend their money on washed up players that are past their prime. Often times trading away young players in their farm system that flourish somewhere else.

What about the guy who was with the rangers forever and maybe Mets? Rodriquez?

Pudge could hit decent average. Not a lot of power. But he played along a stacked lineup and was probably the best defensive catcher ever.

Mike Piazza was a catcher that was known more for hitting.

Often times players start their career as catchers and as they get older they go to 1st base or DH. Knees can’t hold up like they could when they were young.

Any more knowledge bombs you want young man?

I could totally steal that nickname…..”Pudge”

You did ask that and i got lost in the weeds.

For playoffs, id venture to guess they make it more often than not, but with the advent of the wild card (and 3rd wild card), more and more just getting in is good enough and lower paying teams can scrap to a world series.

I use to be a big believer in that money got you far (a world series) but lately it just hasnt nearly at the clip I thought itd be at.

But just straight playoffs, thats probably a 70ish% clip, if not higher, but id have to do more actual digging.

Bullpen is THE most important aspect in the playoffs in my opinion.

Without question.

ESPECIALLY now where even if its the playoffs it seems everyone is on pitch counts. I never understood a team neglecting the bullpen to pay more for a bat.

Pitching always wins in playoff baseball. Yankees staff is sus. I’d be super surprised if they make it out of the 1st round.
Last I looked they were going to play the Red Sox. Not sure if that is still the matchup. They will beat Boston if that is the case.

Again. 27 championships and they are constantly in the ALCS. That is. Because they spend money.

But it’s been what 15 years or more since they last won one? Hence, it’s not working.
The question was do you win more games if you spend more. Not do you win more championships. Are the payrolls of the winningest teams in the league higher than the basement dwellers year in and year out?

Spending helps. But a team like Rays have had a lot of recent success with very low payrolls. The A’s have done it a lot as well.

It used to be those teams that had such a small payroll were awful. Then the whole money ball concept came about and it changed things a bit.

If I’m watching playoff game and my teams aren’t in it I always naturally root for the team with the lower payrolls

27 times which is more than any other team it has. This is as old as Babe Ruth.
Who are the favorites to win this year?
Phillies and Dodgers.
Who spent the most.
Dodgers. #1
Phillies #4 behind Yankees and Mets

I mean if the 1940-60’s teams payroll matters to you then I’m not sure it’s worth reasoning. Most the players from that era were organic to the organization.

Phillies are #1 favorites.

A lot of people have seattle as #2

Then the Dodgers.

As of today. No one trusts the Dodgers bullpen, which is the biggest X factor in the playoffs.

And over the last month or so the Dodgers bats have gone cold, give or take a few games.

Teams that are playing their best baseball heading into the postseason are usually the ones to watch out for.

Look I’m rooting for the Mariners but they just got beat in a throw away game by the Dodgers in Seattle.
And yes the Phillies are really good.
All I’m saying is two of those three teams are in the top 4 of payroll and I don’t care what year they are playing the Yankees are usually in the mix just like this year.
The Mariners are going to have to beat the Yankees from what I’m seeing. We all agree we want that to happen but until they do they are the challengers.

The same issues were happening then as now. The Yankees were paying players more and they were scouting much more than other teams.
My point stands. Money gets you players and the players get you into the pennant races. Winning the pennant gets you in the Series.
You don’t get in the series unless you are in the pennant races.

Sorry I stopped reading when you said you root for the Mariners but are sad they lost *checks notes* a throw away game against a team that also has nothing to play for? They won 17 of 19 yet you care enough to try to make a throw away game mean anything? Literally both teams are just trying to not get injured yet it held some reverence to say that?

Thats flat out embarassing.

They are favored by most to win it all this year and they have the highest payroll. Try to keep up.

I’m willing to bet you the Yankees are eliminated in the first round
