Isn't that the point, though? Even though they are contending, they can't get marquee guys (think LMA for last year, since he kind of was the marquee... a really bad one, but one nonetheless).

I think the piece that makes the most sense as a trade bit is CJ. I love the kid, but he's a clone of the offense of Dame, without any of the extras. Plus we have Henderson in the wings (been a little rough so far) but if we can trade him for a top pick OR bundle for a larger SG, id definitely seriously look at it.

Trading Dame would be a PR nightmare - but if looked at unemotionally, he should not be untradeable. He is good, even very good, but he is not a first-ballot-HOF-superstar. His trade value is actually decreasing.

And as for future free agents, a) WTF are those? This is Portland we're talking about. And b) Dame got paid either way. That's all you need to tell them. But did Milwaukee offer LMA a contract? If not, then we will never know and there is no point. Remember he met with the Lakers twice and the Knicks? Doesnt that kinda disable all these market points right there? Milwaukee signed Greg Monroe and we couldnt... just as small a market, but he saw them with better upside ( I think he got some inside info that our team was not going to be the same)
Meanwhile, the two largest markets in the NBA offered LMA a contract and he denied them. Doesnt that speak volumes to us having a better chance than in years past? I do get that we need to have a serious upside and be predicted to be contenders, but if we are....I think we have a better chance at free agency than in years past.

He's gonna try and rinse ANY team for the most money he can - i totally understand its a business etc but you know he's gonna go to the highest bidder - im just scared we'll be tempted to overpay to retain him, and in my opinion, his skill set isn't enough to empty the cap on.

I think we keep Damian and Plumlee. All others "could" be traded for improvements IMO.
I am not happy yet with Aminu and Leonard. Both don't seem to know how to play the game very well, again IMO.

Answer to the question: Trade Leonard and Aminu or Harkless (I'd prefer to keep Mo) to one of the bubble Lottery teams before the trade deadline and HOPE they finish between 10-14 in conference. I think you could also get a 10-14 pick for CJ.

I don't see other opportunities. Some of you guys are over-valuing our players.

You do CJ + picks/fillers and that could get a top 3. SG is a much thinner position and CJ could garner a lot if he continues to produce well (and not repeat the last couple of performances)

Dame is untouchable, IMO.

In this draft, I don't think CJ + picks/filler gets you in the top three. This looks more and more to me like a special draft at the top, like the LeBron/Carmelo/Wade/Bosh year. If you are in the top three and have a chance at a player like that, you don't give it up for C.J. McCollum. You take the pick and figure you are going to be bad enough to add another lottery pick the following year, as a worst case scenario.

If I'm the Blazers, I am hoping I get into that top five, because, unlike most teams drafting there, we already have a couple of proven big-time guys. Then you use that capspace to work a deal for another player, possibly overpaying or being creative in free agency, or possibly using it as a trade to, in a perfect world, get a borderline all-star type player. Then maybe you look to buy into the bottom of the first round and see if you can steal a Batum-level player.

At least, that would be my formula.

That's fair. Perhaps DEN is not as much of a salary dump target as I had assumed. I don't know much about their ownership and how willing they've been to spend. Robert Sarver might is definitely volatile though. Forgot to mention Markieff's contract earlier-- PHX might be more of a target.
