In the 10 games before SVG let the cat out of the bag about our free throws, Portland averaged:

Portland - 20.7 of 26.1 FTs
Opponents - 15.4 of 20.5 FTs

Then Stan whines to Adam Silver.

In the five games since:

Portland - 14.4 of 18.2 FTs
Opponents - 20.0 of 24.8 FTs

That’s a swing of 12 FTAs per game. Yeah Harden and Russ get to the line more, but somehow, coincidentally, we are also shooting 8 FTs fewer than before. Wow.

Dame’s attempts have dropped nearly 3 per game, from 9.9 to 7.2; his response? Be perfect; his makes have only dropped from 8.5 to 7.2.

Thanks a lot, Stan. It’s not like us shooting a lot of FTs is going to affect your sorry-ass team. You just wanted to fuck with us out of spite.

I'd say it's just as likely to be telling of the competition. We played a lot of struggling teams leading up to Detroit, and have since played nothing but quality teams with good defensive reputations and/or guys known for getting to the line.

LAC
Houston
Boston
OKC
New Orleans

A stretch of games like that will distort a lot of stats.

We didn’t play the 2015 Clippers and 2015 OKC though. And we have a good defense (7th in the league) and got to the line a lot too... so why were we the only ones affected?

I’m just glad this has only cost us two wins so far. That’s mental toughness right there.

SVG certainly hasn't affected Dame's averages.

This season Dame is averaging 7.2 FTA per game.

Over the past five games Dame is averaging...... 7.2 FTA per game.

Overall season averages:

Portland - 16.9 / 21.1 (+2.5 / +2.9)
Opponent - 16.7 / 21.9 (-3.3 / -2.9)
Still a 6FTA swing versus our averages.

It's weird. Out of his past five games he had:

9/9

10/10

4/4 (Boston)

11/11

2/2 (NOP)

So why was he given so little love against Boston and NOP?

Al Horford and Anthony Davis apparently just don’t ever foul (2.6 and 2.1 fouls per 36, respectively)

small sample sizes are really fun to work with

The amount of FTA that CJ gets is ridiculous.

His season average is 3.1 and in the past five games he is averaging 1 FTA per game. This is a guy that averages over 20 ppg on the season, but he can't seem to get whistles.

In the Pelicans game, neither team shot very many free throws as we had 10 and they had 14. Refs weren't calling a lot last night.

The final numbers:

69 games pre-SVG:

POR - 21.3 FTA (19.4 PF)
OPP - 21.7 FTA (19.2 PF)

13 games post-SVG:

POR - 18.8 FTA (20.2 PF)
OPP - 23.8 FTA (18.2 PF)

Definitely just a coincidence.
