How Sustainable Is Portland’s Hot Start?

Blazers’ coach Terry Stotts isn’t going to get caught up in the percentages or where the Blazers’ shots are coming. He understands that he’s got a jump-shooting team and just cares about how those shots come about.

“I’m not necessarily concerned about our points in the paint, offensively,” Stotts said Monday. “My concern is that we get good threes. Preferably, we get threes off the pass, in rhythm, and have confidence to shoot them.”
His belief is that better ball movement leads to more open shots and, therefore, a higher shooting percentage. This dagger three from Batum in Sunday’s overtime win in Toronto is a good example of what he’s talking about …

That looks like a Spurs possession, and Stotts sees San Antonio as the prime example of how an offense should look.

“The way they move the ball,” he said, “make the extra pass, turn down one shot to get a better shot. And they keep playing throughout the shot clock. When we were in Dallas, we played them in the playoffs a couple of years. Defensively against them, you just had to keep playing, because they were going to keep wearing you down with their passing and ball movement.”

Portland's ball movement and team play has been so refreshing this year.

The team is way better, but me thinks not really as good as their record. Winning 50 games would be a stretch and would be incredible.

Everything points to being able to sustain this record.

Well, everything but defense. That's still yet to be decided. Again, the next 10 games will tell the tale. They are doing somewhat better at D, but that still needs improvement.

We go 7-3, HCA is the expectation. 5-5, still in playoffs, just not HCA. Anything less than 5-5 and ruh-roh!

Not at all sustainable this team will likely exceed some expectations and 50 wins could be a possibility but their current pace would put them at 67-15 not exactly realistic.

I doubt we will win 67 but that doesn't mean you drop us to 50. 57 wins is very possible if we stay healthy. With some injuries, we are deep enough to win 45

This current rate is not sustainable, but 48-53 wins is doable, I think.

I dare you to ask Matthews lillard or Aldridge if this is sustainable. I'll buy you a new set of undies.

To make a huge leap you'd need to see guys like Robinson and Wright jump into the mix as far as MPG and contribute significantly. Right now it looks like another year of tired starters and eventual injury.

Really, it's my only bone to pick with Stotts thus far. Other than that he's done a good job of playing the cards he's been dealt by Olshey.

We're not gonna run of 7+ wins in a row again that's for sure. But I don't see this team rattling off a 4 game skid either.

Well @SAS, @DAL, @HOU, @OKC is a four game trip in 5 nights. I could see us losing all of those and having no reason to be concerned whatsoever. We need to pad some wins when we are at home and against lesser teams.

Even with that stretch I'm confident we get 1 or 2 wins with this team.

I say we'd go 2-2! Win the 1st 2, lose the last 2. #letitride

It's so sustainable that our hot start has been Leed certified.

100% sustainable.

It's not like they can take back our wins.

50-32 is a very good record 57 wins would be inconceivable

I've been searching for a database that lists every team to go 10-2 to start a season, and what their final result ended up being.

Can't find any, though. I would have thought that BBR.com would have it, but nope.

It's so sustainable that our hot start has been Leed certified.

It's so sustainable that the state legislature approved a special BETC exception for it, and PGE is giving the standard 50% discount.
