How to keep Kanter?

I say we have enough youth this is a year that we may need to attach our first rounder to Evan or Meyers contract and dump salary in hopes of keeping a few of these veterans. Combination of Kanter and hood or Curry. Personally I like Curry really keeps floor spread teams can’t double off of him

Attach it to Turner. Do NOT attach it to Meyers. Meyers is finally a useful player (unlike Turner) and his contract really isn't that bad (also unlike Turner).

These playoffs have proven that Kanter is far more important than either Hood or Curry. And Hood is significantly better than Curry, but not by the same margin that Kanter is better than Hood. Curry can go get overpaid by some shit team to be a starter and lead them to a high lotto pick.

if he takes a discount and signs a 1-year MLE this summer, then in 2020 we would be able to offer him about 40M/4y using his early bird exception, irrespective of our cap status. That's best-case scenario, IMO.

I'm assuming you mean the tax-MLE? but that's along the lines of what I was thinking, but I guess it's based upon whether a team can give a 2 year contract with a player option for the 2nd year?

if they can then Portland can give Kanter about 5.5M next year on a 2 year deal, with a player option for the 2nd season. That option would 'protect' Kanter in case he suffered a serious injury next season. He could then opt-out and sign a 1 year deal for 9.6M. Essentially, that could give him a 2-year/15.1M deal. And I guess they could repeat the process, meaning his 2nd deal could be a 2-year/20M contract with a player option for the 2nd season. Unless there's some CBA rule I don't know about?

for that matter, Portland could do the same 'process' with Hood and Curry. Hood would get 2 years at about 11.5M (4.17M + 7.29M); and Curry could get 9.22M (3.35M + 5.87M)

again, if all that is legal I'm not sure. I also have no clue if those salaries would be enough to keep those players. Seems like the Blazers are walking a 2-edged sword. The further Portland advances in the playoffs and the more those free agents are integral to Portland success, the more they'll command as free agents

and of course there is the issue of Aminu's free agency and how much tax Jody Allen is willing to pay next season

I think what he's saying is signing Kanter to the Tax-MLE for a 1 year deal (or with a 2nd year option like you said) and then in the summer of 2020 signing him to a 4-year deal with the starting salary of $9.6 million with the max allowable raises each year.

Depending on what happens though we might be under the cap in the summer of 2020 which could effect what exceptions we have and contracts we can offer.

It's still going to come down to whether or not Kanter wants to play for us next season for$5.3 million.

yeah, I saw his 4-year/40M idea. I was just thinking that shorter duration deals might be the best options for those free agents

also, after the Crabbe-ET-Meyers contracts, I'd hope the Blazers go for shorter duration deals themselves

Let's just say we make it to the WC or even the NBA finals, what then do you do with Enes? He has been pretty effective...

Cry as another team finds a way to offer him what he is worth?

This may be the case. It's a tough situation. Nurk will be back and everyone loves him but will he be the same? Probably, but you never know. Kanter is lethal close to the rim, more so than Nurk. But Nurk's defense is great. Will Enes be happy on the bench subbing in for Nurk come next winter? He may say that now but if he sees his value skyrocket over the summer his agent will take care of the rest.

All you hear is that playoffs are all that matters and Enes is bringing it in the playoffs.

One thing working in our favor is the sheer number of Free Agents this summer. Hopefully that will suppress Kanter's value. And Neil needs to sell him on that back-up 6th man role on a championship contender. If we retain him we are one, maybe two pieces away from a Finals contender. Hell, if we had Nurk right now I'd give us an outside shot of making the Finals this year.

With all of that, and how much he apparently likes playing here, hopefully that'll be a enough to keep him. Nurk/Kanter can re-write the script on what it takes to win a championship in today's NBA.

Yeah. Most of my hope hinged on the thought that he would likely have a better pay-day in 1-2 years when the league digested the 2016 overspending, and he saw a short term deal with Portland where he was guaranteed a starting spot for at least half a year on a successful team, and a possible deep playoff run would bolster his value even more. As is, he's in a pretty strong position, and the deeper the Blazers run, the higher that catbird seat.

We're definitely a Finals contender with Nurk now. Even without Nurk we have a puncher's chance against the Warriors in my opinion.

i think he will want to stay here no matter the price. he feels the most welcomed he has ever been in his career. for some players, that means more than money.
I have heard him say that. "It's not about the money.". I can't post the quote though. TBH, I may have just dreamed that last night. Lol. I'll look around for it.....

EDIT: I THINK Brooke was interviewing him. Anyone else remember that???

Oh yeah. I totally agree with you. Denver first, but yeah, we can give GSW a run for sure

I think the number of true free agents has been a little exaggerated

however, it's not exaggerated when it comes to C's:

Enes Kanter

Aron Baynes
Nerlens Noel
DeAndre Jordan
Robin Lopez
Nikola Vucevic
Kosta Koufos
Dewayne Dedmon
Boban Marjanovic
DeMarcus Cousins
Kyle O'Quinn
Brook Lopez
Ekpe Udoh
Amir Johnson
Ed Davis

there are also some C-PF's:

Taj Gibson
Thaddeus Young
JaMychal Green
Nikola Mirotic
Mike Muscala
Dragan Bender
Noah Vonleh
Richaun Holmes
Kenneth Faried

looking at those lists, the C free agency might very well be a buyer's market rather than a seller's market. And even if the Blazers can't get Kanter to bite on a tax-MLE offer with options, it sure looks like they'll have opportunities to get a decent big man using either the MLE or a veteran minimum deal

Whelp, he didn't say it at a bowling alley.... Lol

You think it was Brooke he was talking to? That's gonna be real fun to try and find.

What’s the timeline on the Cousins injury? If he’s healthy for the start of the season and requires another 1 year prove it deal I’d take him if Kanter leaves, can you imagine a C rotation of Cousins/Nurk in next years playoffs:)

I’d also realistically take...
Noel
Lopez(either one)
Boban
ED
Vonleh

Especially for a man, literally, without a country, this is no small thing. And I just heard him say this was the best year of his life, because of the signing.

But, that said, professional athletes have about 5 years to max out their money. Unfortunately, as much as he likes it here, he's not going to forgo some $15 million dollars (say, our $5 million a year for three years vs. someone else's $10 million a year) to stay here. That is lifetime money.
