my father claimed that a deer drinking in the early morning has the sweetest meat...no adrenaline in the bloodstream

If it's drinking vodka or rum, sure. But a tequila-morning-drinking deer is going to be bad news all the way around.

Still have the .270 too. My old Captain of my ship bought it for me in the Navy exchange in Yokuska. A 1958 model 70 Winchester. When I left the ship, I left it there. Maybe 18 years later, he brought it too me. He was a retired Admiral then.
He really did spend his own money on that weapon. It is a damn fine, very accurate long range weapon. Not necessarily the best all around hunting weapon but it will fill a role.

Red bushy tailed squirrel live in the walnut groves of my father's farm...the trick to hunting them is patience...curiosity kills them...you wait after they scurry up a tree and they'll always peek their head around the trunk to check you out....head shot every time.my father and his brothers during the great depression used sling shots to hunt squirrel.something barfo hasn't figured out yet..couldn't afford guns or ammo in the 30's..I would never eat these western gray squirrels...they have no meat and look like rats

Ate a guinea pig once. I confess I didn't hunt it. They are a delicacy in Ecuador. I was with a group and no one would have one. So I said what the hell. Not a lot of meat. Taste like bacon and chicken

I stopped hunting after the war....in the 70s my hippy neighbors would bring me fresh deer roadkill for free all the time...they were mostly vegans and I knew how to dress a dear and tan the hide...I ate a lot of those deer but only if they were still warm and not messed up in the guts

I have no need to feed myself or family that way. Never did consider it a sport. I find no sport in hunting for food, nor any sport in killing the animals. The last was about 30 years ago and the kill made me feel bad. Thus the last.

I haven't hunted for food since probably 1970....and I agree....it's also a lot of work to butcher an animal or tan a hide...I have chickens now and go fishing

I used to have a trap line for coyote....once caught a possum in my trap...the thing just wouldn't die..put a lot of bullets in.it was a horrible experience.kept rising up and hissing at me....after that pulled up all my traps and never did that again.

I don't trouble myself with it any longer.

...well, since I'm no young buck anymore I do have a big concern about falling...but for me, it's more than just the hunt itself. It also has a lot to to with preparation such as trail cameras, mowing, harrowing, prepping, and planting the food plots, keeping the feeders in order, etc., ...we usually start in July for a deer season that doesn't open till October.

if you hunt in the ice and snow from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow you'd better not slip with a handgun...harder to accidentally shoot oneself with a rifle than a handgun

ZTFY.

Eating possum is living poorly. Tried a Porcupine once just to see. Geez! Once is enough.

Go for it! Especially if you enjoy it.

Oh BTW. Did you see? I corrected my error where I was speaking of the Model 94 Winchester.

This the model B92 in the .357 caliber.

I can shoot a buck off my deck without any gear....everday..hell I can walk within 4 ft of them...when I hunted as a youngster I'd sit on a hill upwind at 4am and wait for them to drink in the pond...take them easily without all this high tech gear.with a rifle or a bow..no trees, no blinds...just patience ..my father claimed that a deer drinking in the early morning has the sweetest meat...no adrenaline in the bloodstream

...yup, that's why when possible I take deer with a head shot. If you shoot one in the lungs or sometimes in the heart they can still run a long way and like you said once they've been hit and start running the adrenaline has kicked in and it can definitely have an effect on the taste of the meat...that's also why I prefer young does to bucks, especially during the rut.

Where I hunted you weren't allowed to harvest does.

I’m a helluva cat hunter myself. Knocking them off the fence with my Daisy BB gun is pure adrenaline. Especially if they fall on the dog’s side of the fence........

I would use my BB gun for keeping the Blue Jays away....can't stand those thieves that chase away all the songbirds! Only we manly men weild the Daisy BB gun!

Never hunted. My dad had a couple guns till after vietnam. My friend corey and I used to shoot his dads guns. He lived way out past silverton in the middle of nowhere. We'd take his dads 20 gauge and 30 aught 6 and shoot them out a ways in the wilderness. I don't have any guns, don't need em. I don't hunt. My hands work fine for all else.

...yeah, different states have different laws...hell, in fact different counties in Georgia have different laws. In my county you're allowed 12 deer per season. But because of over population the DNR changes it annually and this year no more than 2 of your harvest can be bucks.
...deer are so plentiful here that hitting them with a car is commonplace. I've heard stories about deer coming through the windshield and injuring or even killing the occupants, sometimes from flailing and kicking them to death.
