You've got your assumptions backwards. Storms gather strength over open water and then break up and weaken when they hit land. The fact that Irma is slowing can be for any number of reasons, but usually means hitting a different airmass with an opposite/different vector, or the fact that it's flanking Cuba right now.
 
My sister is actually on a plane right now flying to Orlando for a preplanned Disney World trip. I think she's crazy, but she's strong willed and will do what she's want. I feel as though she will be okay and safe.
 
Heard an interview with this guy down in Miami, he's so confident he can ride out the storm on his boat he has gathered some of the local homeless people to stay with him.

it's slowing over water. it's almost back to category 5. i feel bad for saying it but i sure hope Florida absorbs the brunt and it doesn't Matthew the coast. im bent over and lubed up just in case. family just left, hope the can find gas on the way to the mountains. they took my truck so im stranded here with the shitty sonata. hope i dont hit a puddle.

Two scenarios: Irma splits Florida in half, or she rides up the western coastline.

Riding up the western coastline would be the worst case scenario, as she would have time to regenerate into a strong category 5, would bring very strong surge into Tampa because they'd get north winds which would pile up water into the bay, and would result in a wider swatch of destruction.

As it stands, the NHC is predicted she'll regain CAT 5 status before hitting the Florida Keys. The damage from this thing will be horrifying.

It's slowing because the trough to the NW is catching it. The storms been moving west at a decent speed because of the ridge of high pressure being the only steering factor, but now that high is pushing it into a brick wall (trough), essentially. It's not quite that simple but that's why it's slowing down.
 
If I told my woman she was a 4 or 5, she'd start smashing shit too.

Calm down to a 4 or a 5, perhaps. But then she'd be angry again, and the cycle goes on.
