OT I Aspire To This Guy's Message....

So, why does what I'm saying in this thread seemingly not have merit with you? Someone can't provide additional texture to the equation?

Because your have a past history of showing that it's just a 'change of heart' for people.

THIS is what I'm talking about.

It doesn't need to be 'cured from the bottom up', because it's not the bottom that causes the issue. That is blaming the bottom for why shit happens to them.

How can they improve schools, if they aren't given equal funding and opportunities?

It totally passes the buck to say the thing needs to be "cured from the bottom up". Because it implies it's the bottom that causes it.

OK, lemme rephrase. When I say bottom-up. I'm not talking about Black people somehow coming to their own conclusions, then finding their own solutions. What I'm saying is, to successfully effect true change, the activation needs to emanate from withing the ranks: Volunteering; community programs and initiatives; local focus groups, etc. In other words, grass roots. This is exactly what Woodson is maintaining here. THEN, with more and more momentum and steam, government representatives and others begin to get involved...taking the pleas and cases to Washington, etc. Model communities begin to form, more momentum and supplemental assistance, and so one.

I'm really trying to understand what the model looks like from a top-down approach from the get-go.

It IS a change of heart. Without it, the problems will continue. Changes of heart begins with knowledge and understanding of perspectives. That's a bottom-up approach.

Something like this...

I just don't see where anyone is arguing that it's "only" a bottom up issue...of course it's not...I've had more than my fair share of disagreements with ABM but I don't think he's implying what you may be reading into this thread...that's just me

At various points, ABM has suggested that government action, when it comes to racism and systematic racism, is ineffective and unnecessary and that real change only happens from people working to improve their own communities. So I don't think I incorrectly interpreted what he was saying in this thread.

I've also clarified my points profusely. Including in this thread. And I've always felt/maintained that anything top-down is (should be) effected from the bottom-up. It's a basic principle of our Constitution.

Once you are labeled, your labeled. Yur not allowed to change, grow, evolve or anything. You are forever condemned for being who you once were. Not who you are now.

Well, if you don't really show much change, growth or evolve on your talking points...

When we talk about refunding the underprivileged neighborhoods and addressing crime in the communities, these are the grass roots organizations that register people to vote, provide legal advice to, recommend for scholarship programs, etc....people were confused about what to do with the billion dollar police fund in New York City if the police aren't able to protect citizens properly....giving funding to these organizations is in essence addressing it from the top down and bottom up simultaneously in my view...it's a solid platform that predates the work of Dr King...community outreach is something we need to get back to. Situation, Problem, Process, Solution.....we haven't stopped arguing about step two , the Problem..in my lifetime as of yet....it's time for the 3rd step....Process ...it's past due time to celebrate the beauty of diversity and empower the pride of that diversity

Can we not turn this into just one more thread bitching about each other?

And yes, I am bitching about some of you.

#Guilty

A sports forum is never going to satisfy people's political and social discussion needs.

I just would expect, when I start any given thread stating some of my opinions, etc. (just like anyone else in here), that it wouldn't dissolve into getting closed, merged (buried) with other thread, and/or the like.

You have the power/authority to keep things in control, Sly. Thanks in advance.

I don't have much more need to talk about politics after this place....only family or if someone else brings it up..now even less because social distance has sort of put a muzzle on that as well...my inlaws just like to talk sports here or fishing

Your threads are not being singled out. If you were to start a thread on why wearing masks is bad during a pandemic I would merge that in to the existing Coronavirus thread.

Sometimes when threads derail into nothing but personal attacks and insults it's just easier to close the thread. Any discussion about the original topic is long gone and it's just ugly.

As you know and helped to create, this is more of a community then it is your average online forum. We do meet in person, we do care about each other personally. Sometimes it's best for the community to take action so these personal disagreements don't spill over into when we meet up in the real world or to make someone feel not welcome when the forum has events in the real world.

90% of the actions taken by staff is in the OT section yet people originally came here because they are Blazer fans. I don't want to lose hardcore Blazer fans over arguments in the Off Topic section.

What about victims of child sex abuse?

Rape?

Your post really seems like it's mocking victims.

I can't speak for @yankeesince59, but I don't think they are talking about victim stance from the standpoint of an actual victim, but someone who always plays the victim in arguments/discussions.

I know. I meant i've seen change in ABM in the short few months i've paid attention. He said the other day he is distancing himself from Trump or something like that.

If it walks like a duck...talks like a duck, even says "I hate the Huskies", it's still a duck even if it sudden starts talking positive about Beavers.

I try to give a bit more credit for mental evolution. For me, I know ive changed quite a bit over the last 6 months regarding Trump, the GOP and the like. I dont see it as impossible that ABM or someone else who has had such a hard line stance, isnt able to do the same.

And remember. sometimes change doesnt happen all at once. Sometimes a portion of our selves changes and it grows and then eventually we have changed completely. :)
