Eric Bledsoe was the starting PG on the team with the best record in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He's not that far away from beginning a very effective player. Could he be the vet backup PG we've always needed? Should we keep him and play him? This never gets talked about.

I'm not sure anyone is going to take him? He isn't worth his contract? Who is going to sign this guy and pay him 20 million? Blazers most certainly won't have a place for him?
IMO Blazers will have to waive him and eat the 4 million. Then he will get picked up and will play for vets min somewhere?
These things get weird when trades and contracts are involved. Someone else might take him on as filler i guess?

Its not 2018, teams aiming for 2023 playoffs.
The guy can play the game. He could lead you to a few regular season wins that can get you a better position in the playoffs.
He's experienced enough that he could even give you some help in the playoffs in some situations.
Just not $20 million worth. He could be a great backup on a contender for vets min.

Are you talking about Dirk or Bledsoe?

Can someone please explain his contract. If only , roughly, 3 mil. of his contract is guaranteed, why couldn't the Blazers keep him at that 3 mil. price? Of course if Eric accepted it.

Hello,

We would need to waive him and then resign for a vet min. I believe, which I don't think is allowed.
The guarantee is the money he gets if waived. If we cut him, we owe him 3 mill. If we keep him we owe him 20 mill.

Thank You, that makes sense. Cutting him, paying him 3 mil. Then re-signing him for Vet Min. sounds like a Laker move. Always able to some how circumvent the cap.

That being said, if it is possible, i like him returning at the Vet Min. I think he'd be a nice addition.

I am not sure the cba allows the same team to sign the player they just waived, but i could be wrong on that.
Some cap/cba gurus here can confirm or correct.
@illmatic99 do you know?

i'm no capguru at all. there are far better resources on this forum.

but you're right. we can't just re-sign him to more friendly deal if we waive him.

He might be traded just to match salaries. If that doesn't happen he'll be cut.

He's a vet minimum guy if that.

2018-19 we still had Dirk and Wade playing, which is as relevant as what Bledsoe did then.

He was starting in 2020. That’s less than 2 years ago as the bubble was in August.

You're going to have to provide this guy a definition if you start using "big" words like that..

So since he wasn’t traded tonight, what are our options with him?

I believe the guarantee date on his contract isnt until July 10th. So we have until then to move him. Or, we waive him and likely stretch the 3.9 over the next 3 seasons.

Same as they were yesterday, fit him into a trade prior to July 10th when his 19.3 million contract must be guaranteed. Right now its only 3.9 million guaranteed.

The Blazers only have to guarantee the portion they need to send out in a trade, so they could receive a $12 million player back in a trade and only need about $10 million of it guaranteed. Then other team could cut Bledsoe after the trade.

Then who pays Bledsoe guarantee?

I hate the idea of stretching him.

We still have Andrew Nicholson on the cap for $2.84 million in 2024! He's the longest tenured Blazer outside Dame.

We have until 7/10 to trade him. FA starts 6/30, so there's still time to get something done.
whoever negotiated this postponement had some foresight. was it our guys or the Clips? This is a really important point. If this Kyrie shit drags on, it's really good to keep that possible 19 mil contract on the books until everything is resolved.

I believe it was part of an extension he signed when he was on Milwaukee.
