I think the baseball analogy is a good one. For some pitchers, they've for better or worse earned the benefit of the doubt, and they get the high pitch called a strike for them. They get an extra inch on the corner. Other pitchers that consistently berate the umps and are whiney douchebags, they get those same pitches called a ball.
