Is MGS: Portable Ops bad or something? I have heard people complain about it being a joke.

It isn't entirely bad. There's still alot of the fun gameplay like the other MGS's..

....but other than some of the similar gameplay and characters, it's completely different and doesn't match up with the original MGS.

I play it probably 2 or 3 times a week, because that's the type of gamer I am, I like to stretch out games. But where I am in the game, so far, the game seems like it has a pretty weak storyline(...when compared to the OG MGS, although I might not be far enough in the game).

MGS had great storylines, that made it feel like you were a part of a great, epic movie, but PO doesn't follow suit at all with that format. It's basically like you're Big Boss (the guy Solid Snake and Liquid Snake were "made" from), and you do pretty random missions. You're part of a team with Big Boss, or Naked Snake, and you have the ability to recruit new members to your team. there's different groups within the team, such as medical, technical, spy, and the ones you actually use in-game--the sneaking units. So it's more like a squad-based approach. In between missions, you're at this map screen, where you can choose where to go to do things like recruit members to your team, get new weapons/more ammo, or actually do missions. at this map screen, you can also manage your team, play online, do other online activities, and save your game.

While this game doesn't follow the MGS format that I expected and loved...it is still a great game, and one of the best on the system. If you own a PSP, this game is a must-have.
