I've worked around the corner from Pioneer square for almost 8 years. Between panhandlers and the canvassers, I'm pretty sick of being asked for money. I generally ignore any rude comments from aggressive panhandlers, but sometimes they deserve a good FUCK YOU!

I show PLENTY of humanity to people in my life. You all only see the bad side of me. When it snowed the other day, my buddy and I drove up to Sylvan just to look for people to help out of the snow. We helped 6 cars get out of ditches and it was awesome.

Anyhow, so obviously you are all cool with pan handlers in your city and at your stores. Is there anyone who thinks panhandlers are a distraction and you would rather not see them when you go to get a gallon of milk? Does anyone (besides the guy sitting with me at work) agree with me?

By the way, dude next to me was homeless for 2 years. Never panhandled. Always was able to find some kind of work. No matter what, he was ALWAYS able to find some kind of job to make ends meet.

Kind of. I feel proud for standing up for what I believe in. I like my clean little town that I have lived in for many, many years and plan to raise my son in. I do not like homeless people and pan handlers in my nice little town. That is what the east side of Portland is for!

There is absolutely no balls involved in berating a homeless man and telling him you'll come back and steal his coins - none at all. If the police know he is there and says it is legal then they are keeping an eye on him as they do all homeless people.

Perhaps you should go berate cops that help homeless people by bringing them to homeless shelters in their squad cars, that bring them bottles of water in the heat, and also take them to spend a night in jail on a cheap charge when it is too cold or hot so they can stay somewhere safe and get a meal if there is no where else for them to get one.

Your second paragraph is EXACTLY WHAT THEY SHOULD DO!!!!! When the cops came and talked to the panhandler, they should have taken him to a shelter for some food, heat and water!!!! Not say "oh yeah, it's cool. You can panhandle in this nicer part of town, we don't care."

Or, I don't know. Maybe offer them some help on how to try and get a job? Take them to a center to help them out? Not say its okay !?!??!?!?

Isn't there a huge homeless center downtown? Why can't they go to a shelter? Instead, they think, "oh, lets go to the nicer part of town where there are more rich people. Lets stand outside their gas stations with signs that say we need gas, even though we clearly do not have a car."

BD, personally, I agree with your views on PH's. I don't go out of my way to talk shit to 'em, but when I get the looks or words (or they intentionally position themselves in my path or my car's path) for not giving up my hard-earned dough, I'm gonna say something.

Two reasons posters on here think you're an asshole for the encounter: 1, the way you posted it and asked if you were wrong, as if you were seeking validation from the jerk-offs on this board; 2, let's face it, you pretty much egged the PH on. And you admitted that you were riled up from PapaG.

Personally, if you're going to sit out and beg for change, you're setting yourself up for that kind of shit. I mean, spend your time trying to get a job. All of these "so-called" shelters cost taxpayer dollars, and isn't that exactly what Republicans don't really wanna pay for? IDK, that always comes across that way to me.

Why don't you offer them some help on how to try and get a job? Why don't you take them to a shelter, and offer them another alternative than panhandling for money? What part of town does it matter that they panhandle in? Why do you encourage panhandling in another part of town - that doesn't help eliminate panhandling, and is just enabling the problem where you simply don't see it.

How do you know they don't have a car? They could have a broken down car that needs gas on another part of town that they sleep in.

Why do you want only the cops to do this? Because it's easier for you to yell and intimidate than do the exact things you say the cops should do?

You don't need a badge to help out the homeless.

The analogy still doesn't work if you substitute 'lawn' for 'park' as they are neither under your territorial jurisdiction. You do not own the park so you have no right to police the park. And I'm the dimwit for understanding this basic concept?

What you did to the homeless man was menacing. It's menacing to verbally harass another person who has done nothing illegal to warrant it. It's another simple concept that you are missing. And yes, I do hope that somebody puts you in your place the next time you choose to menace them.
