What if we used Matthews to get a combo SG/SF bench player? Now don't get me wrong. I love Matthews and love his defense; but I'm wondering if a starting line-up of Felton, Batum, Wallace, LMA and Camby is the best starting 5. If this is the case; then we need someone to back up Wallace at SF. I would hate to see Wallace or Batum get into foul trouble; then we become extremely thin at 3.

Here is my supposed trade.

We would get a younger center back-up, with an alright PER of 9 and a SF that would be fine being a back-up. This would bring in flexibility as well, because he can still play in a "Small Line-up" situation, if we plan to move Wallace at PF and Aldridge at center during stints.

Thoughts?

Considering I am not a Matthews fanboy, or believer, I am liking this trade. Of course that is until Batum gets hurt, or Felton gets hurt.... :) then we could be SOL.

🤦

The last thing this team needs is to trade one serviceable starter for two players who are barely above replacement level. You're thinking the wrong direction here Mags. I'm not opposed to trading Matthews, but think 2 for 1 not 1 for 2 and think starting caliber power forward or center.

I can't think of a single front court player currently on our roster that I would play Petro in front of. And that includes an injured Oden.

You guys really think Wes is that awesome? Or , is it that he could get more value?

Oh well I was just tossing this out on the debate of Batum starting at 2. If that's the case, then I worry about Matthews even being able to play some 3. Just tossing it out there buddy.

If you're really looking at retooling, think the trick might be to look at teams with expiring contracts or cap space, who maybe have a defensive-minded (new?) coach, that maybe we could package (in a perfect world) Wallace and Wes together for an expiring and a young player (and maybe picks)? This would clear a bunch of our cap space, get young talent (or picks to trade for young talent) and stockpile assets.

Maybe to NOH for Gordon and a pick?
Maybe to GSW for Ellis? or Curry and Biedrins?
to BOS for Ray Allen and LAC top-10-protected pick?

All kinds of possibilities. I'm just not sure we're ready to take that plunge, I'd like to see some more games against good teams to see if we need to change that drastically.

I don't think he's "awesome", but I do think he's better than Damion James.

Yes, the center is ridiculous. I just used him to make the trade work. Maybe a protected first rounder then?

God, fuck no. A PER or 9 is NOT "alright". It flat out sucks. You want to trade a solid NBA starter for two pieces of shit? What the fuck are you smoking? We are MUCH, MUCH better starting Wes at the 2 and letting Nic back up both the 2 and 3. That gives all three of Gerald, Wes and Nic plenty of minutes and we can always have two of the three on the court together.

The question is, Mags: Does this trade get you and me closer to courtside seats in June? That should be the first consideration for all proposals. :)

I shit forgot!!!! LMAO! Yeah fuck this trade... Fuck you Batum and stay on the fucking bench. We got some Finals courtside seats to be had!

Prediction: Batum will never ever start at guard in his career anywhere. Forget about your dream.

I'm not a fan of making trades to "let someone else start", if they want to start, play good consistently and beat out the starter to do so.

Bwahahahahahaha! Get out of this forum!

I think Matthews is too important to this team. His hard-nosed D and effort mixes well with Wallace, Batum and Felton.

Exactly! If they are good enough to start, they would be. If they aren't, you're trading away the better player and weakening both your starting five and your bench. Makes no sense.

It's not my dream... Just a reply to a debate. I like Batum coming off the bench, just as much as I endorsed not trading Wallace because he is a BEASTMASTER!

You won't get laughed at by me. That probably doesn't comfort you very much though. I have never thought Matthews should be our starter

I like Matthews and while I wouldn't mind trading him for a quality SG/SF, I think we'll have to wait 2-4 weeks before considering his impact on the team and if he's worth trading.

Can always move Wes to the 2nd and have a shot-off between him and Crawford

Hey we agree!!!

Now which June are you referring to?

Matthews is at 8.9 right now. A shooting guard who can't shoot, and does nothing else on the offensive end, is a liability. I trust Matthews will end up somewhere in the 12-14 range of PER for the season, meaning it's a position that should probably be upgraded at some point.

Good thing Matthews can shoot, and do other things on offense.

What else does he do on offense, other than shoot? He's averaging 1 apg, and mainly seems to stand on the perimeter looking for 3 point shots. He's averaging almost 2x as many 3 points attempts/game (5.5) than FTA/game (3.0). As I said I expect him to get better, but he's a very limited player on offense.

He's good at fast breaking and getting himself open for layups.

He's not an offensive wizard, but he's more than just James Jones sitting in the corner waiting for threes. Only about 33% of his points last year came from threes, so obviously he's doing something else.

I'm not even going to answer stats after two games. You know very well those don't mean much.
