If you are interested in getting him, wouldn't it make sense to figure out who he would really like to play for and try to hire him? A max salary and a chance to play for a coach you always wanted to play under might be enough of an advantage--and it is the one part Blazers would have some control over.

I don't think it's Sloan.... didn't they end on bad terms?

Interesting thought. We offer him a 5-year max deal and a short list of coaches to hire.

Nothing like the inmates running the asylum.

I think fining out a coach that DWill prefers is good basketball sense. Getting a GM on board with the decision is better basketball sense. If that coach is hired, and DWill doesn't come here, whatever PG we bring in would probably like that coach as well

What if he likes Nate? Or Flip Saunders?

Dwill is a great PG. I hope we get him. But he is a bit of an ass. Maybe you can chalk it up to being young at the time, but after every playoff loss in Utah he blamed teammates. He is by no means a leader. He was a bit of a prima donna. I would still take him and I still like watching him play, and maybe he has changed since being traded. But finding a coach that he would like to play for would would probably be DAntoni out of all "fired" coaches. Just like all the other players he likes to play offense. And no Sloan would not be an option.

He's not coming even if you made DWill player/coach.

It's easy to make blanket statements like that, but harder to back it up.

Who are the players for Williams?

Dallas: will have the money, but will surround him with an aging cast of players. Quick wins, but not much going long term.
NJ: has the money, but he knows what that team can do. They are a long way from winning if that's what he wants
Phoenix: another team a long way from being a contender. He would be replacing their best player.
Indiana: if he doesn't mind small market, then this would be a nice fit with Granger, Hibbert and a growing cast.
Portland: has the money and another all-star with a young cast who would fit nicely around him.

If he is only concerned about money and endorsements, then he stays with NJ and loses.
If he wants to end up with multiple title shots, then it is between Indiana and Portland, with Indiana maybe having the edge. I don't see how Portland is so far out of contention. It's not like they are competing with every team in the league for him. Only those with cash who have a chance to win.

How in the fuck is it between Portland and anyone if he wants to win multiple titles? What has Portland done to show that is out there?

you have to add in the appeal of playing in his home town as a plus with dallas. the mavs are a team that won't be able to add much to their core but with williams, dirk, carter, marion and haywood over the next two years they may be able to make a run. in two seasons when everyone but haywood comes off the books, they'd have to rebuild again but they might have another ring. i'm not so sure they'd win it with that crew but maybe. in portland he has an allstar the same age as him and a couple picks that they could use to bring some help. the pacers have more decent players than we do, but they don't have that bonafide allstar, and as everyone says, stars win in the nba.

having said all this, it's a dream scenario to sign him and i don't think it will happen but it might not be as far off as others think it is. and for the record i think he ends up in dallas.

Every team that wants him and has the space is in for a "pipedream" of signing him. There are big pros and cons of each team but the fact is that no one can get into Derrons head and he is going to go were he wants to go. The pros and cons list only really comes into play if he is having a hard time deciding between teams.

i think the pros and cons come into any decision anyone makes in life unless they are dead set on doing one thing and one thing only. we have no idea what is going on in his head, other than what he says. from what i've heard he doesn't care about market size and all that other stuff but he wants to win. so as fans we take that and run with it, when in reality that may not be the truth. all we can do is sit here and speculate until he chooses a course of action.
