They're only spinning it that way because of how others will say that about the (overwhelming majority of) people on the right who are lunatics and gun down people/kids/etc.

In essence it's a glorified case of "nuh uh, you are!"

I think also, it's possible they don't train these guys, at least adequately and if they admit one messed up, the others will come under scrutiny and the lack of training will get out and they will look bad. Not, that they don't look bad saying the things they are saying.

A trained officer is trained in seeing when danger is coming and also when they are out of danger and to regulate emotions and thought process quickly.
