Anyone else sick of this shit? Portland as always is completely unprepared. It should be a shit show.

We have a winter like this every 8-10 years, not sure how much preparing we could do.

The important thing to do is just stay the fuck home. Even if you claim you're the world's greatest driver in the snow and ice it doesn't prevent someone else from hitting you.

Why is it that you always see 4x4 trucks and Subarus in the ditch?
 
I like it how people in cities without hills (i.e., the midwest/central time zone) always crack shit on Portlanders for how they handle snow and ice....well, hills make a little difference.

Add to that the city doesn't prep worth shit and you have a shitstorm.

The midwest salts the shit out of the roads. I havr a coworker who laughs at how we drive in this who grew up in the midwest. But he understands now because we dont salt at all

I drive my subaru at 20 to 25ish mph in this stuff and have no issues. The scary thing is the people that drive 40 to 50 like nothing is different that zip right past you.

While Im not a fan of salting the roads (corrosion sucks), I think many of the people who think they know how to drive in snow, do so from a background of better management of the roads AND lack of hills/ice.

My parents both came from an area that had snow much more often than where I grew up. My dad, especially, was confident in his driving ability. Would make fun of Oregonians/SW Washingtonians for how they handle snow, and how the city closes when there is like 1/4 inch of snow on the ground.

that was until he moved to my childhood home, and had to deal with hills, and ice.
 
I was in Vancouver for the first snow of this winter. We had less than 1” and the entire area was shut down for two days, including many govt. buildings.

I then drove to my cave in Idaho, on 200 miles of Oregon black ice. I probably passed a dozen accidents, one looked real bad. As soon as I crossed the state line out of Oregon, the road had been cleared of the black ice and snow pack. I never saw another accident or car in the ditch.

Funny thing is Idaho and E. WA. can get 2’ of snow, and everyone safetly drives within a few hours of the snow stopping. They know how to deal with and drive on snow and ice. Oregon and W. WA. doesn’t know shit about snow and ice.

This has been one of the coldest winters in a long time. At my cave in Idaho, we usually get snow every winter, but it melts away in a day or two. This winter, it just keeps piling up. Where is global warming when you want it?

I don't mind it. I love the snow! Get used to it. Global cooling just on the way!

You answered your own question. Those areas get yearly snow. In Portland we can go years without measurable snow so there is no real reason to have dedicated snow removal equipment.

Yes and no, there is more to the story when you compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges.

I take the I-84 to Hwy 730 that runs through Umatilla, and then turn on Hwy 12 that runs through Walla Walla, Lewiston and beyond. So I am driving through 3 states on the 400 mile drive. I make this drive about twice a month.

All of my 200 mile drive in Oregon is dangerous when it snows. When Hwy 730 leaves OR and enters WA you can see exactly were the state line is on the road by the ice. The black ice stops, and the dry pavement begins in WA.. It was so noticeable, that I almost stopped to take a picture.

The point is, even in the Eastern areas of Oregon were it snows about the same amount as E. WA, Oregon does little to clean their roads. E. WA and all of Idaho get after the snow as soon as it starts.
 
The other thing is that we get a very heavy wet snow usually. It's not the light shit that a place like Utah gets. This snow is great for snow balls..... but it's a bitch to drive in.
 
As somebody who travels everywhere for work, just sit back and relax and enjoy that you live in one of the most beautiful cities in the country . Who cares if you know how to handle snow, it's gone before really becomes an issue. I doubt you'd want to live in the Midwest where they totally can handle the snow, but you might as will be living in a trailer park.
 
Shit, and I have 4 tix to the game tomorrow. Was going to take the fam.
 
I have to drive down a pretty steep mountain to work the next two nights...I can drive it without a hitch but the idiots that are coming down the hill behind me are the problem

I wouldn't be surprised to see a mostly empty stadium, for those that just don't wanna risk it. Getting out of the Rose Quarter is hard enough after a game; never mind 2 inches of snow and ice.

I've got my recliner ready. I ain't going nowhere. My cat will be my warmth.

I hope we get more snow than ice. I really like snow.

Good call there. Ticketmaster has a CRAPLOAD of resale tickets available. Awesome seats for cheap. (well, cheaper than normal....)
