Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

i thought it was a good contest, IMO. Rudy had an early exit, but he was boring, didn't use his own teammate, and took forever to do his first dunk.

That was Howard... who was given a 50. Rudy made his first dunk on the first attempt.

Well this IS an internet message board

I don't believe the game itself is rigged, but I DO think that sometimes certain officials will try to affect the outcome of the game. Especially in certain playoff games. One good example that comes to mind is the Lakers-Celtics game 2 last year. Now I don't like the Lakers any more than everyone else in here, but the free throw discrepancy in that game was ridiculous. Now this was a HUGE game and everyone knows that every Finals game gets the league a bundle of cash (especially since its Boston and LA), so I gotta think there was some incentive to extend the series and help out the underdogs a bit. Cause lets face it, if LA won game 2, then there's a good chance that the series could've been over in just 5 games.

To me, there's just too many coincidences, and I'll always look at that game as having very, very suspect officiating.
I think you're saying that you dismiss the possibility that the players might be in on potential fixing of the games, which is sort of interesting to think of really. If it is fixed and some players are aware of it, what does continuing to draw a salary make those guys?

I've thought something is rotten in Denmark regarding the officiating for quite a while. From multiple interviews I've heard with David Stern defending the legitimacy of his league's star system of officiating, to the nightly favoritism for the home team NBA officials clearly take an active role in the results. Donaghy's existence and allegations didn't surprise me in the least. Nor does DStern reneging on his promise for transparency in the review of the officials in that scandal. Despite their growing credibility issues with the general public the league seems bent on retaining direct control over the officials.

I wish someone else was in charge.

I don't believe games are ever fixed from the get go. There's no way a conspiracy of that magnitude would hold...there'd be way too many people who would have to be on the "inside", and word would get out very quickly and strongly. But again, I do believe that, on some nights, one or more officials will try to affect the outcome of the game. As for the reason why, who knows...pressure from the higher ups? Monetary gain? Personal vendettas? Your guess is as good as mine, though I think all three are viable. And I also believe that sometimes, despite their efforts, their attempt is unsuccessful. I think there's a fine line between making favorable calls toward one team vs. unquestionably making calls to directly affect the outcome, and stepping into the latter category would be very dangerous for the officials. Just look at Joey Crawford's 100% ridiculous double T on Tim Duncan a few years ago. Of course then again, if the league IS behind it, then.....yeeeah. :\

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

This years Dunk Contest was obviously setup before with Howard and Robinson scripted into the finals. As an NBA fan this is one of the most disappointing memories of the sport. So if David Stern will rig the Dunk Contest to improve his image of the NBA is there anything he wouldn't rig to ensure the NBA generated maximum profits? Is David Stern's NBA rigged? Stern has proven over and over again what kind of a person he is and I think this is a black eye on the sport.

The NBA's so totally rigged. We had no business getting that #1 pick. So even with rigging, you win some and you lose some???

I think Minnesota recieved good value for Garnett.

The jury is still out on the Pau Gasol deal. Personally, I like Marc Gasol alot. He's skilled around the basket and has the toughness I like to see in a player. The Grizzlies also recieved two first round picks...the first one ended up being Darrell Arthur and who knows about the 2nd pick in 2010.

Grizz cleared a shit load of cap space too. The deal isn't as bad as people make it.

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

With that being said? The contest jumped the shark, once and for all (as far as I'm concerned) when Howard got to bring out his own basket.

of course, if lebron really is in it next year, you know you're going to watch.

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

The dunk competition has become a big popularity contest. The good old boys club.

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

It seems to me that there is no reason the NBA shouldn't completely script the dunk contest. It's just entertainment, and if they figure than they can write better entertainment than the players can come up with spontaneously, then why not?

When it comes to the games, is there any legal reason the league couldn't fix the games? It seems like it ought to be illegal to do so, but I can't think of why. Certainly fixing games in order to defraud gamblers would be illegal, but what if they were just fixing the games to 'enhance' the entertainment value?

Why not a trampoline? Or a hot air balloon? Why not rappel down from the rafters?

Fucking stupid.

Really, the dunk contest jumped the shark when the stars decided not to do it anymore in fear of losing, so it's resorted to all these damn gimmicks.
They keep showing the old clips of MJ vs Dominique, and the only way to recapture that is having LeBron vs. Kobe vs. Vince vs. Dwight vs. J-Rich vs. Josh Smith. Talk about that being the most epic contest ever. But too bad these guys have too much pride or ego that they're afraid to lose.

There's no reason LeBron shouldn't have been in one. The guy dominated HS dunk contests, and now he doesn't want any part. Oh well..

Around the Horn

Yes. You are correct. Thanks.

Yes, that was his line in the script. You know that whether he actually does it depends on contracts and the plot development, and if he is written out, there will be some likely explanation like he's in a nuthouse...

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

How can you say the contest is rigged? Rudy's dunk first dunk was nice, but his second was alright. Nate's second dunk was wack, but since he got a higher first dunk, he went through. However, Dwight's dunk on 12 feet was alright, I wish he did more though. But it's still 12 feet. Nate over Dwight was insane, so to doubt that is stupid. 5'9 jumps over a 7 footer is nuts. Good dunk contest, no doubt.

These guys are showman, and they put on a great show. The best 2 dunkers went through and the best dunker won.

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

funny how two eastern players are in the finals with 3 very lame dunks rudy's dunks were more impressive thats both of nates.and howard's 50 was the lamest dunk of the comp.

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

Considering I thought he was not going to really do anything worth while, he did better then I feared he would.

But I never in a million years thought he would get out of the first round.

Re: If the Dunk Contest is rigged is there any reason to believe the NBA isn't rigged

I think Rudy's scores were fair, but seeing JR Smith get around the same amount of points as Rudy for his awful lob from the stands dunk was sad.

Also, I don't get why people still want to see VC and Kobe in the dunk contest. Neither of them has hops as incredible as he once did. Neither would do anything out of the ordinary at this point of his career. I doubt J-Rich has hops like he used to, but he could probably still compete with the best dunkers in the league.

Exactly. You already know what the script is for next year. They were just setting up a raised-rim dunk contest with Lebron and Dwight next year.

Rudy's second dunk was debatably the best of the competition. Nate's dunk was against the rules. And DWIGHT HOWARD IS 6'9 NOT 7'!!!
