If the Yankees miss the playoffs

If the Yankees miss the playoffs, I hope they miss by at least a 15 game margain. Why? Because if we miss by 3 or 4 games the Boss will order Cashman to spend spend spend on everything that throws, and trade every prospect for a win now mentality. If instead, the Yankees miss by 15 games, it won't be a story at the end of the season, and it won't be a "one more player will put us over the top" mentality. It'll instead be a "let the big names walk, keep the good young talent and reload responsibly because the old way wasn't working."I said this last year as well (after a 10 game losing streak), and we ended up making the playoffs by a good bit. However, I feel we need to go with the healthy mix of young talent and high priced studs. Keep the core (Jeter, Wang, Cano, etc) but we don't need the 15+ a year guys, especially in the rotation when they are in their upper 30's. I love Moose and Pettitte. But if we can't get it done with them, it's time to sign guys who are in their mid 20's, bring our own guys up (Wang-Hughes-Rasner-Karstens-Wright might not be the ideal 1-2-3-4-5, but it's better than three quarters of the rest of the league, and if we can add a guy like Carlos Zambrano (or another big time pitcher in his 20's to early 30's) then we will have a fabulous 1-2-3 punch with a solid back end rotation..... and we'll cut a quarter of the payroll doing it.I also can't wait to see J Brent Cox move up and take over for Rivera. Rivera might get one more year, but he's clearly not what he once was, and Cox is the obvious future at the position. I would love to see him moved up to the bullpen this season, have him move into the setup role (it's not like Farnesworth is a stud there) by the end of the season, be the setup guy next year and by 2009 be the closer. He has the dominating stuff of a blazing fastball, wicked slider, and cruel change-up.We need to move the young guys up in general. I don't mean put Tabata at DH, but guys like Sanchez need to be in the pen and guys like Duncan need to be pinch hitting and sitting on the bench.

1) It's better to have people like Duncan playing everyday in the minors then it is to have them get maybe 1 Pinch Hit at bat a game in the Majors. It will do more for their development to allow them to play and work on their game down there. 2) Steinbrenner will never go into a rebuilding mode. The only time the Yankees have gone through a youth movement under Steinbrenner was in the Early 1990's and that was because Steinbrenner was banned from baseball. 3) Rasner, Karstens and Wright in the rotation next year? Ouch. All 3 of them are back of the rotation types at best. You guys would be better off at least trying your luck with Clippard and Sanchez, but regardless you'd probably still have to add somebody. Isn't Pavano and Igawa still under contract as well?

I agree 100% with what you said Venom.The Yankees obviously need to get rid of the overpaid underachieving guys. Namely Giambi and Abreu. I think Phelps has a good future ahead of him and he's a better fielder now then Giambi ever was ever. Keep Damon and Matsui as they're doing pretty well and put Melky in RF or shuffle the OF around to make it work.Keep Cano and Jeter (obv) and I think they should keep A-Rod (my opinion on that could change as the season goes on). Posada should stay too seeing as how he's hitting like .380 this year.For the rotation keep Wang. Get Pavano the hell out. I think Rasner and Wright have decent stuff. Hughes has a great future ahead of him.

It's not that, but all teams have weaknesses, and it just happened that Clippard fit the bill for the one on the Mets. If you want to beat the Mets throw your AAA rotation at them.

basically the season for the yankees is this week.if they sweep the red sox, they still have a great shot at making hte playoffs.if they get swept, then they are done. they would be too far behind the red sox to catch up, and the wild card is going to come from the AL Central.unfortunately, the yankees always find a way, i mean, we are talking about a rotation thats going to end up looking like:Clemens, Mussina, Wang, Pettite, Hughes.yeah, that can compete for best in the league when healthy. if the yanks sweep the red sox, they are right back in it and everyone can jump on their bandwagon again.

We had a 10 game losing streak last year, and lost 5 of 6 to the Red Sox later, and everyone had the Sox picked at the All Star break and yet the Yankees won the division by a good margain. I don't think the Yankees are out of it if they get beat up (BTW, we won game one), it'll be tougher, but when our arms are back to health, we'll be studly again, and the Sox will have a downslide at some point. No team doesn't.
