1) It certainly explains keeping RLEC and having insurance pay the $$ on it.
2) Someone has decided this team is in trouble financially.
3) Pritchard likely will try to move to another team.
4) I want Paul Allen to sell the team.

I understand that this team will probably go as far as Oden can take us, but treating your best player like this seems to make me think that many of the players (Oden) might just think 'wait..you're low-balling Brandon? Um...see yah later".

But the team would both offer Hedo Turkoglu $50m over five years AND sign a backup power forward to a $40m+ offer sheet?

TBH I think Paul Allen is a fucking ****. Are we lucky to have a guy with deep pockets? Hell yes. But he can fuck off back to Seattle as far as I'm concerned esp if they are going to start playing the Seattle v. Portland emotional blackmail card.

Exactly, it doesn't make sense. If they wanted to save money, they could just say, well there aren't any free agents or trades that "fit" so we're going to "bake it". But no, they're trying to land another piece.

It makes a ton of sense.

Of course, you DID come up with the "Vulcan/financial difficulties" conspiracy theory to "explain" why the team would treat Roy similarly to how every other player receiving max dollars off of a rookie contract (other than Carmelo Anthony) has been contractually treated.

That your conspiracy theory is internally logically inconsistent clearly doesn't bother you and demonstrates why you might lack to capacity to understand why Portland isn't simply rolling over for Roy and giving him the fifth year. :)

It would seem to suggest that there might be more to his knee issues than he's letting on.

If you're Brandon, and you fear that you might only get 1 major contract out of your career, wouldn't you want the 5th year? And if you're Portland, and you fear you might only get 1 good "contract" career out of Brandon, that you wouldn't guarantee the 5th year?

In that sense, it is logical. Although it's frustrating as a fan, on top of the off-season non-action, that this happened. But I think a lot of that is just how fans are slitting their wrists over this and every other thing that has happened since the end of the 1st round.

I already explained that, and your answer was "a market has been set". Had all of the players you listed asked for five years and accepted less, then you would have a valid comparison. Since they did not, your comparison is worth s**t. I also don't feel that offering Roy 5 years at less than the max as a starting point is "rolling over" to him.

Well one is a 5 year extension, where the other is a 5 year contract. If they signed Hedo to five years, and Roy to a 4 year extension, they would be free agents in the same summer.

You might be right about the knee... that's an unknown.

I feel FAR more certain about the way the new CBA is going to impact players and player movement... there's going to be a labor war, probably, and I honestly think that salaries are going to take a serious nerfing (in the owners' favor). Roy wants one more year under the "good" CBA and the Blazers don't want to give it to him.

There is a reason that next summer's class of FAs is so great: because Bosh/Wade/James all wanted to get one more (long-term) contract under the current/good CBA, rather than become free agents in the following summer where no CBA will be in place.

What they ask for is irrelevant to me. Players ask for more than they get all the time.

A market is set by what a selling price is (or, in this case, contract dollars), not what one side or the other wants.

That's great, but it is totally relevant to the situations you are trying to compare. LeBron James didn't ask for five years, neither did Wade, neither did Paul, neither did Williams. So comparing Roy's situation with their situation seems rather silly to me since Roy wants more years than the team wants to offer.

I have to agree with you and if any of those guys wanted a 5 year max deal the teams would have jumped all over it.

Wake up dude. We have the richest owner in basketball (Soon to be #2 if the oracle thing goes through) and we are so fucking spoiled. Now you know what the other 25-28 teams feel like. If Paul Allen sells we are really fucked. Here in SLC the owners are not poor. But because of the small market they have to be on a tight budget. How much bigger do you think Portland is?
 
My semi-educated guess? Vulcan is taking the coming labor war very seriously. Stern hasn't lost a single major battle yet, and he is unlikely to lose this one. Stern is a captive to his weird hatred for the players' union (which is just strange, given how comparatively weak the NBA union is), and is no doubt being egged on by losers like Shinn, Heisley, and Sterling. I would bet the majority of owners don't actually want the lock-out/cancelation of the 2011-2012 season, but just don't have the guts to Das Commisar.
