Trans people are an easy marketing term but the intent has always been to discriminate against all gender nonconformists. It’s just not as snappy as “we will end transgenderism”

the GOP/conservatives have long used the "others" as targets for their base to be afraid of or hate. Blacks, Mexicans, women and gays have long been the target of choice, but society (slowly) changed where they weren't allowed to use them anymore.

Now they're going after people who are trans, but eventually the majority of the country will be fine with them and the use of them as a target will no longer be accepted...but the GOP/conservatives will gaslight the hell out of their base and act like they've always supported them.
