I personally think it is ridiculous to say that sporting advantages due to genetic differences, which can be absurdly huge among the same gender, are all 'fair' - but being transgender is 'unfair'.

Hey, it's not fair that that other kid is bigger/taller/faster than my kid.

My solution is simple: let them play. It’s not a big deal, seriously.

if you want to see a sport with trans rep handled well, look at Roller Derby. Watching trans feminine players play with cis women and trans masc folks showed me a lot of things. One is that trans women are no better than cis women at the sport.

Trans women make up 0.5% of the female population. Most of us suck at sports just like every human. We couldn’t take over women’s sports if we wanted to AND WE DON’T WANT TO. We just wanted to be treated as something less than dangerous.

The difference between a short obese uncoordinated woman and a typical female basketball player is likely far larger than the difference between that latter player and a trans person.

It's not clear to me the great advantage to drawing the exclusionary lines where you want them rather than someplace else. Maybe giving the short obese girls a shot at glory would be a better use of resources? Let the tall thin girls play on the chess team or something.

There would still be teams and leagues for every trans person as well, under my proposal. And not a "trans only" team or league (unless of course there were enough demand and they chose to have one).

I don't think anything we could realistically change would make more of those things more available to more people.

Only necessary under capitalism of course. Normally I wouldn’t make the distinction but we might be close enough now to realistically suggesting other options that it’s worth reminding folks that the profit motive makes everyone’s lives less rich.

That's a good point. I'm all for positive feedback for competitive activity. If we could expand it so more people could find a place that would be great.

I was in an extremely competitive—and successful—high school marching band. We had more trophies than our football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams combined.

The whole kit and caboodle, the entire sport of marching band in Oregon, was destroyed because middle school and grade school band was gutted. You can’t get people who play musical instruments in your high school if they were never given the opportunity to learn as kids.

This is where the problem is: if there’s no support among the kids, there’s no talent pool for the adults. The only way to fix that on a big enough scale is with mothertrucking socialism (or better).
