After passing a bill through the House that would ban abortion at six weeks, Ohio Republicans are considering legislation that would ban abortion completely in the state and make the procedure punishable by life in prison or even the death penalty.

House Bill 565, sponsored by Ohio Sens. Rob Hood and Nino Vitale, allows for no exceptions for abortion in cases of rape, incest, or danger to a woman's life. Under the law, fetuses would be classified as "unborn humans," making abortion punishable under the Ohio criminal code. This means that a woman who receives an abortion and doctors who perform the procedure could face criminal penalties, ranging from a prison sentence to capital punishment.

Unfortunately, floating criminal punishment for abortion is not an obscure idea among conservatives: In April, Idaho State Sen. Bob Nonini suggested that "anyone who has an abortion should pay." And, before he was elected, President Donald Trump said "there has to be some form of punishment" for women who undergo the procedure.

I don't like abortions but I'd be God damned, if I were a woman, if I'd let someone else tell me what I can do with my body.

Morally speaking, I don't see how it's reasonable to be both pro-abortion and anti-capital punishment, yet most Democrats are.

At least I can see how one could have the opposite viewpoints, since the people who actually get executed like Westley Allan Dodd are shockingly depraved and little fetuses are not.
It depends on what you mean by pro abortion. Do you mean that you're not comfortable with a woman having an abortion under any circumstances or do you have a wider definition that includes those that don't like abortions but leave it up to the woman to decide for herself what's best? There are lots of morality choices in life and we have to be free to choose from among many of them.

Innocent life taken vs someone who took an innocent life

Seems pretty different to me

There's probably a great abortion joke to add here. I mean any joke can be good with the right delivery......except abortion jokes of course because there is no delivery.

I find that too many people on the pro choice side of the abortion debate seem disturbingly content with the idea of it. I myself am pro choice and think the far-right's efforts to outlaw it are a needless waste, but I also feel that abortion is a terrible thing that we should strive to minimize as much as possible.

Abortion should be like DMV. Go if you have to.

One advantage of going to the DMV - nobody tries to claim you "wanted" to do it or didn't have a darn good reason to do it.
I don't hate the DMV with a passion anymore. Don't know about Oregon but we have appointments now and I don't even really mind going. In and out in 20 minutes.

I’m of the belief that people who don’t want children are shitty parents. Don’t make them contribute MORE shittiness to the world. We have enough.

It's a free country and you're welcome to your point of view. However, I find mine to be morally principled. Ordering someone to not perform or receive an abortion on penalty of law is

When I moved back to Lake Oswego, I had to get the address changed on my driver's license. I was in and out of the branch at Mt. Park in no more than an hour and a half. When I bought my last car in 2005 I went to my local DMV at the Tanasbourne Mall and was in and out in less than 2 hours. I don't think I've been in and out of a DMV in Oregon, Washington or Missouri in less than half an hour ever. Oh wait, maybe 50 years ago.

An obvious part of the problem is that one side cites theology, while the other is debating the appropriate limits of government power. I am not "pro-abortion", but I am not willing to give that power to the government and I sure as hell am unwilling to give churches that kind of power!

My Church doesn't want that power. We leave it up to the woman to decide what she thinks is best.
I don't think we'll ever reach an agreement on this issue. There are, in my opinion, valid arguments on both sides. I just tend to lean one way more than the other. Those of you who violently disagree are just going to have to live with it.
