I still find what he said offensive.

He didn't feel comfortable because the city wasn't black enough.

Like I said earlier, if Nash said that he wouldn't play in Atlanta or Brooklyn because it was "too black" it would start a shitstorm.

She's been in locker rooms with other girls/women her whole life. You think someone would have noticed? She looks like a woman. Her face, her build - she's tall & muscular but it's still a female build and female face. She is small-busted like most female athletes but definitely has women's breasts. I don't know what LGBT blogs Papa G reads. I honestly can't see him cruising LGBT web sites. And I sure don't need a straight male homophobe telling me what LGBT sites I need to read! But I read Outsports and aDyke and HRC. Funny, no one has any mention. You boys just can't handle a woman being better at anything than you are. So you have to pretend she's really a man, or partly a man, or somesuch bullshit.

Kidding aside, Griner is a bad-ass. She's the first female I've actually thought would have a chance to make it in the NBA. But crand, I think you're partially right when you say guys can't stand women being better at something than them. But I think there are a lot of us guys who are cool with it, but we get caught up trying to discredit how individuals got to the level their at. I mean, look at how crazy everyone is about drug testing athletes. When someone is so dominant, we all suspect their must be more to that person that helped them reach their pinnacle of greatness. We get the witch hunt going....

Anyone who says they haven't at least wondered if there was something more to Griner's dominance is a flat-out liar. Her situation is likely fueled by the situation with the female track athlete that supposedly is a hermaphrodite. But I think you're over-generalizing all men and our thoughts. I'm sure you wouldn't like me to lump you in the same group with all females, Jews, and/or lesbians.

Because Griner is not the tallest woman to play women's BB. Kara Lawson was 6'7" but no one said she was part man or man in disguise. No one said Margo Dydek, 7'1", was. Because they were good players but Griner is great.

I'm not an athlete by any remote stretch of the imagination, but I'm a sports fan. And you know, I've had men get po'd because I knew more about sports than they did & could cite stats and games from memory. In fairness, I've also had men try to hit on me because of my sports knowledge! When I was in college with a 98% average in my all math classes, there were a couple of guys in the classes openly hostile. I don't think they would have minded if I was better at English, but math? No one worried about how male presidential candidates dress but Hillary Clinton's clothing was somehow important. I won't overgeneralize, I have male friends, some straight, but you know, there are men who get really antsy if a woman is better at a "guy" thing.

What this has to do with Oden I don't know. But the recent revelations about Oden & now Mitt Romney have cast my memory back. We all did stupid things in our teens, that's what teen years are for, but there are some things most people just did not do. I tried to go barefoot in high school, took a few tokes, but I never assaulted anyone. I was wild & crazy enough to arrive in a strange city with $50, no job, no home, more on less moving on a whim (to Seattle, if anyone cares), but I never drank away a job. You know, there are lines that we either cross or don't.
 
I finally got around to looking up Griner and hermanofight or however you spell it. It says Griner is only a college player. Let's wait to see what she can do in the pros.

For some reason I didn't have to look up sphincterosity. A brain like me can figure out things from the context. I'm guessing she's flat, and that's why you guys are calling her a man? Anyway, I'm sure she's no hermanofight or she-man or however you spell it. I hope she's a harbinger of female athletes to come.
 
You know, jlprk, it's not too often I agree with you. You can't find any information on Brittney Griner being hermaphrodite or abnormal because she isn't. Unusually tall, yes, but so is most of the NBA. We called Damon midget but at 5'10" he's above average height for an adult male.
 
In its early years I watched the WNBA but got away from it. Then I got sick of Comcast's unique variable billing amounts so I dumped them. So far the no-TV lifestyle is working. I have more time to impart my valuable thoughts here.

Sounds like I should watch her play someday. Right after I watch a Blazers game someday.

Why are you so upset that some people speculate that Griner may have been born a hermaphrodite or intersexual? Are you bigoted against hermaphrodites and the intersexual? Seems odd that you'd care. She has a deeper voice than many men, an Adam's apple bigger than mine, and clearly has better athleticism than 99% of women basketball players I've seen.

I did find it interesting that she declined to play in the Olympics. They conduct hormone and gender testing at the Olympics. :dunno:

Which NBA players have declined to play at the Olympics? Hell, even Kobe's playing again this summer, and he's 56 years-old in basketball age.

She was invited, she declined, citing some vague family illness, and also the need for "summer classes". Funny thing is she's a Recreation/General Studies major.

Why are people so offended in pointing out the obvious? That's she not like the other girls, and typically there are genetic reasons for it.

curvemag is essentially the lesbian version of National Enquirer. Funny, where is ESPN? or any other reliable source? Not sure how someone like Papag started reading that. I'd rather rely on everyone who's ever played with Griner. And maybe she really does need to study, or have family commitments. She's going to have plenty of opportunities.

What is offensive is a flagrant homophobe saying a really athletic woman can't really be a woman.

I never said that, and I'm not at all a homophobe. You, most certainly, are bigoted against the intersexual or bi-gendered, as your own reaction in this thread proves.

I hope you do realize just how damage you do to your "cause" when your first reaction is to always slime and smear anybody trying to have a conversation about it. I happen to think Griner has very high levels of testosterone, and I wonder how that occurs. I'm not saying she's a cheater, or a man, or anything like that. She is very unique, and worthy of discussion. Unless, of course, you have other reasons to give for her baritone voice and androgynous features.

PapaG is the only one in this conversation assuming a gender placement by observation alone; that the others in the conversation are not willing to engage in speculation based on looks or sounds is not a symptom of closed-mindedness, but is instead a symptom of a mindset that consists of (a) not speculating on something as important as gender from something as easy to deceive as "your own eyes" or "common sense", and (b) recognizing that the only place the truth can come from is Griner, rendering any conversation on this essentially a non-starter.

That others in this conversation with PapaG are angry is because of the disingenuous tone, reminiscent of grade school where bullies insist they aren't going to do anything bad, as they lay a conversational trap for the bullied. That these other people recognize this technique just sets them on edge from the start, which makes the technique effective (which is itself equally frustrating).

So, in summary: nobody buys the fake sincerity; nobody can know for sure without Griner telling them. Any continuation beyond this point is pointless unless it's to needle other participants in the conversation, which I fully expect to happen given PapaG's reputation.
