Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

You can eat carbs, just eat oatmeal, green apples, berries, brown rice etc.

The zone diet is a fantastic way to live your life

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

I found 16 carb buns. I'll have those once in a while after I'm done with the induction phase of the diet.

My diet is nothing like the zone diet. I've not had rice or bread or pasta or oatmeal or anything that has 25g+ of carbs on their own. The meat I eat is not low fat, either. The burgers I made tonight are from 70% lean hamburger meat.

So more like the Atkins?

Whatever works for a person is great.

I've always been skinny, but put on a little weight after tax seasons and it immediately shredded right off on the zone diet.

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

It is pretty possible to lose tons of weight super fast on NO carbs. I would eat six Wendy's junior bacon cheeseburgers with no buns or lettuce.

I lost 50 lbs in a couple of months. Then I stopped doing that and gained 167 lbs over 10 years. Peak, 467. This week I was 336, no ***gy low carb diets. No stupid zone, paleo, blah blah blah, jenny craig bullshit.

Portion control, a variety of different non processed foods and exercise. Low carb diets are just a bandaid that people who need to lose 40 lbs use.

I still have 70 lbs or so to go so I have no room to bash others for their diets but common sense should rule the discussion.

Denny is going to put up 10 different graphs showing you that you're wrong.

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

I have to mention that watching what other fat people put in their carts at the grocery store is shameful. There was a Samoan chick in line in front of us, burgers, chimichangas , bacon, frozen pizza.......... fucking disgusting.

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

Bodyman you basically described the zone diet. Five to six small portion meals a day and nonproccessed foods. You basically have lots of protein, some complex carbs and some healthy fats like avocado, salmon, natural peanut butter, almonds etc.

Not Atkins. I learned about induction reading about it, though.

I count net carbs as carbs minus fiber. Atkins also subtracts sugar alcohols. Most foods I see don't show the sugar alcohol amounts, so it's hard to really track what you eat.

It's not paleo, either. It's just counting carbs, eating lots of veggies, and I'm taking a vitamin and fiber supplement as well.

I'm quite sure I'm in ketosis. Induction is working.

I'm also walking at least 4 miles most days. That helps a lot.

I have no problem eating at restaurants either. Burger without bun, vegetables, and salad at the least. We ordered from pizza hut the other night and they have bone in garlic Parmesan wings that are 1g carb per 2 wings.

When I'm done with induction, I'll increase my carb limit to 100 or so, and see how it goes.

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

Bodyman stopped doing his diet and gained weight. Sorry to hear that, but he quit on the diet that worked.

Could be, however....if you do a diet and then cheat you feel bad. I may gain a pound or two one week and lose 6 the next. I don't ever worry about it in the long run.

Did I mention the part where I lost weight and felt worse? Because that is what will happen. You ride 11 miles, gain 900 feet of elevation while it is 104 degrees and see how you feel. Me ten years ago....stroke. Me at 40....easy mode.

You didn't say you felt bad, just that you stopped and gained 167 pounds.

I don't know of any diet that recommends eating zero carbs, so yeah, use a little common sense and eat a more balanced diet than Wendy's burgers.

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

You said you stopped your diet and gained a lot of weight. Why did you stop or not adjust it?
If you think you are going to count carbs/avoid them for the rest of your life you are fooling yourself. I played basketball for 3 hours a night and lifted weights when I was 25. I ate shit food. You can't do that forever.
Let me tell you what happened when I started eating carbs after avoiding them for two months.

When I would eat bread my face and scalp would turn instant red. I gained 30 lbs of water almost instantly because your body stores water to use to burn carbs. On Atkins, I lost that water first off and gained it back times 2 after.

Anything you do to trick your body does just that. I should mention that my aunt had an an extremely rare type of stroke at the age of 54 while on Atkins. Does that prove anything? No, but it doesn't help.

I think you will find the term common sense in a post of mine a few posts back.

Re: OT: LeBron James Shows Off "No Carb" Weight Loss

If you weighed 500 lbs and low carb was a last gasp, I could see it. To lose 40 - 50 lbs......seems stupid IMO.

I know people who are vegans and have been vegans for decades. Why do you think it's so hard to avoid mass quantities of carbs?

I was already on a diet and lost any water weight long ago. I was just staying the same weight, not gaining or losing. I'm not missing foods with carbs. So far I've been able to find substitutes that make me happy enough.

Atkins has four phases of diet. You were overdoing phase 1 (too much protein, not enough vegetables), at best. You never did phase 2 or 3 or 4.

In phase 2, you add 5 grams of carbs to your diet each week.

In phase 3, you add 10 grams of carbs to your diet at a time until you reach your desired weight and until you stop losing weight.

In phase 4, you know how many carbs you can eat without gaining, so stick to it.

Just a bunch of gobbledygook. Life isn't about phases of this and that. Atkins is like common core math, a roundabout way of coming to an already obvious conclusion.

Good luck to you. Whatever you're doing, you say it's working. That's what counts.

I moved the diet posts and arguments from the Lebron thread on the main page to this one.

Hey, what works for you!

I'm a Mediterranean person myself - basically produce, whole grains, legumes, very little meat but fish/lean poultry, olive oil in moderation. Being an urban farmer and living in California, vegetables and fruit are a walk outside my door (currently greens, beans, pumpkin, peaches, lemons in season, apples on the way) Also started again hitting the gym; it's on site where I work. 4 days a week (Thursday is my late day). I'll check back with you guys in a few months....

Still doing the low carb diet and still liking it. Shorts I bought last year now fall off if I don't wear my belt, and belt tightened all the way.

I got ketostix at CVS yesterday and the test strip says I'm truly in ketosis. I got the science right.

The more I do this diet, the more expansive the menu. I've been able to find keto friendly meals at most of the local restaurants. I stay away from sauces that aren't mustard or mayo based; I ask them to serve that on the side. I ask for extra steamed veggies instead of potatoes or rice.

We go out for breakfast on Sundays. IHOP mixes pancake batter in their eggs for omelettes, so I ask them to use shell eggs. I don't trust Denny's so I ask for shelled eggs there too.

Some of the keto diet info sites say it's ok to cheat for a day a week or for a meal once in a while.

I've not been tempted to cheat yet, but I probably will eat some stuffing on a Thanksgiving day or have a pizza once in a great while.

Denny do you or have you been into juicing before?

I have an omega vrt which I really love having...even tho I haven't been using it as much recently.

Juicing isn't a big keto diet thing. Many veggies have a lot of carbs and they're to be avoided (like carrots). Only berries in small quantities are good on my diet, so I wouldn't be making fruit juices.

Juicing may also kill the fiber content, and fiber is really good on my diet.

I calculate "net carbs" as total carbs minus fiber and try to keep my net carbs under 25 a day at this point. I foresee a time when I've lost the wait I'm hoping to lose where I'll bump the carbs from 25 to 100 or even 150 a day.

I do have a single serving blender that I make chocolate almond milk with. Sometimes I add peanut butter. It's yummy either way :)

I found this on reddit, and they basically say the same thing:

Note: this diet is my own concoction. I'm walking 5 miles a day and eating a lot more protein than a traditional keto diet recommends. I have no "macros" that I'm following, either. I just read the food labels and eat things with low carbs, assuring I eat about as many grams of veggies as protein. I don't avoid low-fat foods, but I don't seek them out either. I've even put heaps of butter on some veggies or in recipies.

Yeah, fruit juice and some vegetable juices are heavily loaded with carbs per serving.

I personally eat a small portion of berries and a larger portion of vegetables (raw, steamed, smoothies) throughout the day.

Re: Hey further

So I'm trying the low carb thing and it's not too bad. The hardest part is figuring out what kind of foods to eat.

For low carbs, there isn't anything really good to satisfy a craving for something sweet. I've found a couple of things, though, that aren' too bad.

I put two teaspoons of peanut butter, a teaspoon of zevia, and a teaspoon of low carb cocoa powder in a blender with a cup of almond milk. Yummy.

I also found a low carb vanilla yogurt that tastes real sweet.

Going out to eat at restaurants is really easy. Roast chicken and a salad and steamed vegetables. There's a place nearby that has these rattlesnake jalapeño peppers wrapped in bacon as an appetizer and they have great cheeseburgers (no bun, of course).

The really tough one is breakfast. Fruit is high in carbs, and I really like it as a side dish for breakfast. Bacon, Sausage, and Eggs are great, but I'm probably going to get real tired of the same thing every day :)

It's been 3 days and I've lost about 6 pounds. I'm aiming to eat 50g carbs or less, and I've been having a hard time breaking 20.

I just read up on "net carbs" and I think I'm going to count those instead of raw carbs. But I'm only going to take raw carb # and subtract fiber. The sugar alcohol bit seems like a scam to me.

Adkins makes peanut butter cups that are AWESOME!

I won't eat any of the Atkins foods. Really expensive, and by my net carbs calculation they're super high carbs.
