So for now on every person selected for jury duty should just pubicly state they are not impartial and have made up their minds before the trial starts.

I tried that once when summoned for jury duty, hoping to get out of it...it didn't work, and I had to serve. But I get your point.

Final Trump impeachment vote teed up for next week after GOP blocks Dem effort for new witnesses

Senate plots path for impeachment trial after witness vote fails

Republicans in the Senate secured enough votes Friday evening to reject Democratic efforts to extend the impeachment trial of President Trump and call new witnesses, paving the way for his widely expected acquittal next week on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress over his dealings with Ukraine.

DEMS WORK TO DRAW OUT IMPEACHMENT FINALE, POTENTIALLY PUSHING FINAL VOTE INTO NEXT WEEK

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said late Friday he expects to "conclude the trial in the coming days" as the Senate approved the framework to continue the trial on Monday, with a final up-or-down vote on Wednesday.

After hours of debate during the day on Friday, the Senate voted 51-49 to block a Democratic motion to call new witnesses. The vote came after vehement demands from Democrats to call former national security adviser John Bolton to testify about the Trump-Ukraine saga. Two Republicans -- Utah Sen. Mitt Romney and Maine Sen. Susan Collins -- voted with Democrats.

"A majority of the U.S. Senate has determined that the numerous witnesses and 28,000-plus pages of documents already in evidence are sufficient to judge the House Managers’ accusations and end this impeachment trial," McConnell said after the vote.
Later on Friday evening, Senate Republicans voted down four amendments offered by Democrats to call Bolton and White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, among others. Chief Justice Roberts told Schumer before that vote series that he would not break ties in the Senate, after Democrats in recent days raised the possibility Roberts could possibly tip the scales for them during votes on amendments.

"I think it would be inappropriate for me, an unelected official from a different branch of government, to assert the power to change that result so that the motion would succeed," Roberts told Schumer.

The vote on witnesses came as Trump was flying to Florida. A senior administration official aboard Air Force One said that the reaction to the Senate vote was “calm, but pleased."

"Nothing like applause or cheering, but just a recognition that things are clearly going in the right direction,” the official said.

There will be no trial action over the weekend. The trial will resume Monday with closing arguments by the impeachment managers and defense counsel. Senators will have the opportunity to make speeches on Monday and Tuesday.

The final vote will come the same week as Iowa’s caucuses on Monday and the State of the Union address on Tuesday. A senior congressional source told Fox News that there has been no discussion about postponing the speech, as advance teams have been crawling all over the Capitol in preparation for Tuesday’s address.

Earlier Friday, it became apparent that Republicans had the votes to shut down any new witnesses from testifying in the trial, with Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announcing they wouldn’t defect.

After the vote on witnesses, Trump drew attention to the number of witnesses during the House's impeachment proceedings: "Democrats = 17 Witnesses. Republicans = 0 Witnesses."

He said the timing of these events “are totally irrelevant."

Earlier in the day, several GOP senators grumbled at the prospect of the trial continuing past Friday. Many expressed frustration that Trump got impeached on what they believe is a flimsy case and they want the trial to end as soon as possible.

“Let’s go and get this over with for the sake of the American people,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said.

Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., said Trump will be able to give a State of the Union address on Tuesday successfully even if he hasn’t been acquitted just yet.

“He would be able to do almost anything most other individuals couldn't,” Braun said.

Elizabeth Warren trolled Judge Roberts, posing a question, he had to read allowed, about how this trial will make hurt his and the supreme courts credibility, in presiding over a trial where no evidence or witnesses are allowed. The look on his face after reading it is priceless.

“At a time when large majorities of Americans have lost faith in government, does the fact that the chief justice is presiding over an impeachment trial in which Republican senators have thus far refused to allow witnesses or evidence contribute to the loss of legitimacy of the chief justice, the Supreme Court and the Constitution?”

Serial liar commie swamprat attempting to impugn the legitimacy of the Constitution, the SCOTUS and Chief Justice?

Sort of exposed her true anti-American position there.

Another miscalculation by the Dems. All this effort and they wouldn't even get the Presidency if they won? How did they not realize that?
Pence was implicated in the same thing as Trump in the Ukraine affair. Both should have been impeached and convicted.
I wonder what's going to happen at the ballot box this November.

Does anyone actually read the ten page screeds Maris copies and pastes from right wing web sites?

On planet Earth, Cipollone (sp?) could be in serious trouble with bar association. He acted as attorney without divulging he is potential fact witness, and flat out lied when he said no direct evidence Trump was pressuring Ukraine to investigate Biden. Also he is supposed to be investigating why call record was wrongly put in super secret server when allegedly he was the one who put it there. Makes you wonder what else is hidden.

In the weird position of arguing Bolton is a war criminal but not iiar.

1. Nope...I finally just put him on the "ignore" list...it make scrolling/navigating through threads/pages without wading through his walls of words and I realized that he's not gonna change my mind anymore than I'm gonna change his.

2. And yeah, Cipollone could very well be in hot water.

I have never read one of his cut and paste posts. Why he thinks he needs to paste the whole article rather than a link is baffling. I doubt many if any actually read those posts.

Rachel Maddow wasn't on the air yesterday. Not that facts deter Maris.

Nixon resigned. Clinton apologized. Trump declared himself the greatest president ever.

All three were the correct response for the particular situation.

Just like Republicans insisting that Bolton is an untrustworthy secret liberal who's part of the deep state takedown of Trump. There is something wrong--partisanship (which is just the political term for tribalism) has spiked to absolutely unhealthy degrees. Winning for your team is much more important than actual truth. While I think Democrats are much closer to the truth in this particular case, I have no illusions that if the circumstances were reversed, Democrats would be using many of the same tactics as Republicans to try to discredit and stall and confuse.

I'm not sure they'd have done everything Republicans have, as I think Republicans in this case have found a new bottom when it comes to desperation (especially Dershowitz's unironic insistence that anything a President does for re-election is, in his mind, in the best interests of the country and therefore unimpeachable) but history shows that what principles each party (and often, each politician) holds when it comes to subject of corruption and process depends on which side of the accusation or issue they're on.

good post! Yep it never about give and take or compromise anymore its about winning at all cost, regardless.
Kids in school are being effected by the tribalism you mention and they are not being taught how to find common ground or neutrality. Sad!

As I said, Bolton is a war criminal, not a liar.

A person can be wrong 99% of the time and do one correct thing.

That said his behavior is hardly praiseworthy. I said he would refuse a House subpoena. Then he said he would accept one from Senate, even though he must have known that was less likely to happen. He delivered selective leaks. He could have offered to come to the House. Or he could have contacted any journalist in America, print or television, and been granted an interview, as much time if he likes. If he doesn't want to talk to Rachel Maddow or Anderson Cooper, Chris Wallace is a conservative who does actual journalism. He chose not to. Instead we are supposed to buy his book.

I ignore nobody, even the delusional.

crandc is obviously unable to ignore me, as she adds a personal insult naming me in every post.

Later, I will post pictures of the magnificent piece of Real Estate I now occupy in her head.

Chris Wallace is a democrat, I believe.

Windstorm wreaking havoc with TV reception.

Romney would have voted to remove him no matter what. He hates Trump, which is what a lot of this boils down to.

Other republicans probably wish to remove him too, but they really can't for political purposes.

Actually because Romney is one Republican who doesn't need Trump. Utah is a conservative state but Trump is unpopular while Romney is popular. He is richer than Trump. Either it benefits him to look independent, or he really has some principles.

Just censure the SOB and get this over with. We all know he isn't going to leave office unless he loses the election. And even then, he'll probably go screaming and crying.

It would be interesting to see if Mitt would have done this if the acquittal wasn’t already a done deal. A protest vote is easier when there aren’t any ramifications.
