In a shocker, McCain camp also wants to postpone VP debate

Would it be fair for Palin to go on campaigning, while both Obama and Biden were in the senate doing their jobs?

If there's any real advantage to McCain in all of this, it's his ability to conserve on his campaign spending for a few days.

I'll say right now that I'm leaning to voting for McCain probably 60%-40%. If the debates are delayed for a week or so, I have no problem with it. However, if this delay request is a tactic to cancel the Vice Presidential debate, I will vote for Barack Obama. Sarah Palin as President scares the life out of me, but part of my fear is that I haven't been able to view her in an extemporaneous forum. I need the debate between her and Biden to get comfortable with her. If the GOP decides they need to try to run away from it, I cast a vote for a candidate I don't particularly like as a protest.

Hopefully he doesn't cut back on those college scholarships!

How about taking out loans? If less government money were available, you wouldn't see tuition increase 7%-8% annually while inflation has been less than a third of that.

Now come on people, Washington needs Palin there to help work on this economic crisis. I know she isn't a senator, but her husband had no government title and found his way in Alaska government affairs. Sara Palin can do the same thing.

And think what she can add, when talking about all the bad loans and what to do with them, she can politely raise her hand, and tell teh congress "I know what to do with the bad loans . . . . . . . let's ebay them" and then she can tilt her head and smile for the photo shoot.

Go Palin Go!

Major props to Olbermann for saying this was a ploy for McCain to get the VP Debate cancelled right after McCain made the announcement.

What? Keith Olbermann said something negative about John McCain? Next you'll tell me Sean Hannity may say something bad about Barack Obama.

This is looking like a major blunder by McCain. Obama has been able to frame it as McCain can't multitask.

I don't buy that argument. I see John McCain as a leader who is putting the economy ahead of his own candidacy. For better or worse, Henry Paulson and the Republican leadership has decided that they need McCain's presence in Washington to get this deal passed. It doesn't seem like the Democrats need Sen. Obama there, nor does he appear to have any desire to drive the debate.

Why not just post something from dailykos? It's about as reliable.

Also, when 86% of the nation wants the debate to go on, well the debate should go on.

People have been organizing parties around this first debate. This would be like if they postponed the Super Bowl on the Saturday before the game. It is a ridiculous thing to do.

The debate will go on. It may go on a few days later. What's the difference? As for people scheduling parties, changing a date for a get together is a little less important than purchasing the equivalent of $2,300 of MBS for every man, woman and child in the US.

And as sad as that would be, it would be more than Sen. Biden or Sen. Obama have done heretofore regarding this crisis.

It blows my mind how blase people are about this bill. This is the most impactful piece of legislation in any of our lifetimes. If it doesn't happen, to quote Patrick Swayze in "Next of Kin": "You ain't seen bad yet...but it's comin'."

I'm not blaze about the bill . . . they just don't need McCain and Obama to get it done. As evidenced by the fact they have reached a bipartisian agreement.

I profoundly disagree. First, Sens. Biden, McCain and Obama are all members of our national legislature. This is the most important vote any of them have ever been faced with casting. They have a moral responsibility to be part of the debate and the vote.

Second, either Sen. McCain or Sens. Obama and Biden will be stuck with the implications of this bill. From a management perspective, it makes sense that either party would want it on their terms to allow them to have as successful a presidency as possible. Abdicating it to other members of your party is simply irresponsible.

Third, Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama are the leaders of their respective parties. You don't lead by skirting responsibility on a bill of this magnatude.

Besides, Palin's going to kick Biden's senile old ass in the debate anyway, so the whole premise of this thread is silly. ;)

I really do wonder if Sarah Palin had made the gaffes Biden has in the past couple of weeks, if she would still be on the ticket.

I wonder if the brain aneurysms he's suffered has taken a little heat off of his fastball. It's sad for me, because I really like Joe Biden. I think he's an honest and forthright guy.

What makes you say that? I certainly haven't been impressed with Palin the 4 times I've heard her talk without a teleprompter.

And that is what makes him a bad VP canidate. : )

The only prop Keith Olbermann deserves is one that will hit him upside his head.

Woah... you haven't been impressed by a conservative candidate for VP?

Shocking. Normally you heap praise on the GOP.

Props to you for ripping a Republican!

You're a funny dude, Ed O., but unfortunately you can't joke away the criticism on Sarah Palin with sarcasm towards her detractors.

She's a moron, she's in way over her head, and there's a reason why the McCain camp is desperately trying to keep her away from impromptu situations.

Let's translate Palinese into Obamaese. He must be a moron way over his head.

Energy Security is National Security

"Our enemies are fully aware that they can use oil as a weapon against America. And if we don't take this threat as seriously as the bombs they build or the guns they buy, we will be fighting the War on Terror for a long long time."

Hello, this is Senator Barack Obama, and today is Wednesday, March 1, 2006. I've got a couple of quotes for you, I want to see you if you can identify them. Quote number one: ". . . Oil is the umbilical cord and lifeline of the crusader community. . . ." Quote number two: ". . . focus your operations on oil, especially in Iraq and the Gulf area, since this will cause them to die off on their own. . . ." The first quote, the words of Al-Qaeda. The second quote, the words of Osama Bin-Laden. More than anything else, these comments represent a realization of the American weakness that the rest of the world understands and knows about. It's a realization that for all of our military might, our economic dominance, the Achilles heel of this country is the oil that we cannot live without. Oil single-handedly fuels 96 percent of our transportation needs. We saw during Hurricane Katrina this kind of dependency means that the loss of even a small amount of oil and refinery capacity for just a few days causes tremendous economic pain and soaring prices. A serious embargo or a permanent loss of our oil supply would mean untold economic disaster.

Mistaking a year on when something happened almost 50 years ago or saying "uh" a bunch of times does not equate to being unequipped or unprepared to be president. Not understanding the fundamentals of the economy or national security or foreign policy or climate change does.

By the way, this youtube war could go on forever. For example, McCain not knowing that Czechoslovakia is no longer a country.

Anyways ... back to the topic of this thread ... Palin is not prepared to address the nation unprompted. She doesn't understand the issues well enough to speak off the cuff on them. And I have no doubt that her campaign staff knows this and is pulling every card they have to try to give her more time to prepare.

I think all this is stupid. If people want to nitpick over this kind of thing, you can find McCain or any of them similarly misspeaking.

The 2nd video, though, might scare Obama fans. That's what he looks like without a teleprompter, and I doubt he'll have one at the debates.

Seemed to do just fine in all of the debates during the democratic primary campaign. He's also done the talk show circuit, and he's been on the campaign trail for nearly 20 months.

Palin has been around for about 30 days, has had two interviews with the press unprompted, and she's looked totally out of her element both times.

I'm not convinced about her either way. I'd like to see her be successful, exactly because she doesn't seem to have come from some party machine environment, and she isn't the professional and polished politician we're used to seeing. While people harp on a sentence or two of each of a several hour interview, I'm not seeing that she's anything as bad as people want to portray her. It's ridiculous to expect her to know all the senate bills McCain's been involved in sponsoring, what the votes were, and how he voted on every bill in his long history.

On the flip side, I see Obama getting a few hours of sleep at a time while traveling around the country. It's not surprising to see him (or McCain) fumble words or make a mistake that's just as easy to pounce on.

should make for an exciting debate, then.

(videos zapped)

That's it?

The only part that I found at all significant is about the conflict of interest question that she just repeated her answer. The others? She's either spinning or avoiding questions that she doesn't have answers to.

Which is pretty much what politicians have to do sometimes.

You're a funny dude, Ed O., but unfortunately you can't joke away the criticism on Sarah Palin with sarcasm towards her detractors.

People can criticize her all they want... I don't care. That you would find these clips damning when many people who are less anti-GOP would not does not surprise me.

I don't think getting her location mixed up or failing to be able to answer every question put to her perfectly is an indication that she's a moron. She might be in over her head, but the same thing could be said about Obama or any politician with so relatively little experience on the big stage.

Palin has done 3 interviews and has stumbled and bumbled her way through them. She claims McCain to be a "maverick" a term that campaign throws around so loosely, yet she doesn't know what her running mate has done to go across party lines and get that maverick title. She couldn't even give one example.

Meanwhile, Denny you are scouring through one of hundreds of interviews/speeches that Obama has given. Of course he's going to slip up during a long campaign.

I'm not sure they are even remotely comparable.

I just wish she would stop talking about Russia. Everytime she goes there, she either says something stupid (Putin in US airspace), or something horrible (laying the groundwork for a war against Russia). I don't want a president who is going to move towards war with Russia.
