Is Chauncey a good coach?

On offense, Dame is a pick and roll point guard who needs to dominate the ball. It's the way he's always played. CJ likes to dribble and create his own shot. It's the way he's always played. Ant likes to impersonate Dame and CJ, because those are his NBA role models. Nurk sets screens and wants to get fed on the roll. Roco shoots 3's. None of these guys are elite at attacking the basket.

Stotts tried to revamp the defense as well. He just threw up his hands and went back to the old system when the changes didn't work. Mostly because our guards were too short and uninterested in defending. Those problems don't change with a new coach.

How much can Chauncey really change on either end? He can get Nurk to show more on picks on defense, but otherwise there's only so much you can do differently with the same personnel who have been playing the same way for years, who also have severe height disadvantages and disinclinations to defend.

Portland needs a change in culture and philosophy and style on both ends of the court. It's really tough to do all that with only changing one key guy (the coach).

I don't disagree at all. A number of posters were saying this like 6 months ago.

So you think Dame might as well just retire at 32 huh?
He certainky will not be willing this caliber of team to many wins much longer after that.

And he can play as long as he wants. I'll want him here. But we can count on about 2 more great years with him. Anything beyond that he'll likely be in decline and missing long stretches to keep his body right.

It would be nice to have the best shot at winning possible over the next 2 years because we'll need another all star to compete by then.

this is a team completely dominated by 6'3 & under guards. Those 4 short guards, average 61 of Portland's 90 FGA's. And the three guards not named Lillard do not combine to average as many assists as Lillard. Portland is an unbalanced roster.

Portland is stuck in purgatory until that terrible balance is fixed. This isn't really Chancey's fault
Or Stotts's.

I'd just like to hear from all those people who railed constantly against Stotts for his stupid coaching, and who said that Chauncey couldn't help but be a great improvement. Are you happy? Is this the improvement you wanted?

I will say this: so far we've been a good home team. If that stays true, that's definitely something.

Just think if this roster had significant injuries and was forced to play Snell and McLemore?

Stotts had 9 years to put his stamp on the team, and I wasn't happy with the results. Billups has had 15 games. Am I "happy" with the result? Hell no...but it isn't exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, is it?

IMHO, all the current situation does is prove my contention that Olshey and Stotts both needed to go. I guess we all see what we want!

Too early to blame Chauncey but I also don’t buy it’s the roster construction part either. I blame players for the most part. Although if I had to submit a way too early coaching grade for Billups it wouldn’t be very good. Play Little more. Yank guys. Where’s all that accountability we heard about.

I definitely think it’s a combination of not having the roster to play the way Billups wants and players use to playing for a coach who didn’t hold them accountable. You can see Billups letting players know when he’s not happy.

I think in order to play the way Billups wants you need some size and versatility. He keeps trying to play smaller lineups and we are getting burned. CJ or Dame have to go and we need a guard with size who can defend.

If we can’t turn this around soon we need to seriously consider going nuclear on this roster.

dame- star player in return 2-3 1st rounders maybe pick swap
CJ- decent player in return or maybe draft pick
Nurk- ??
Roco- trade to contender get pick back

or trade CJ for Ben and give it try ( my idea situation but think it would’ve happened by now if it was possible)

I’ve wanted to blow it up for a while so I agree with you. The roster isn’t perfect obviously but it should be playing better than this. Last night was a gutless effort and had nothing to do with roster “construction” imo

good coach would know how to use nurk and get the best out of him

im on "fuck chauncey billups" train

also fuck cj mccollum, powell & ant for being selfish bastards while were at it

I think we get it, you're from the same place Nurk is..but he's in his what, 8th year? It's not coaches and teammates that are holding him back. It's him.

yes, hes my countryman and i like nurk (im also a blazers fan, even before nurk joined the team), but im his biggest critic there is

hopefully he gets traded soon, he has nothing to gain in this team, but he can gain elsewhere

bring in center who is servicable for the role nurk has (rebounding, screening, defense) and itd be a good fit, nurk shouldnt accept that role cause hes better than that

Here's the thing, he's not. He hasn't shown it after 7 years he's not all the sudden going to change his habits. And maybe a guy who went to 5 straight conference finals, won an MVP in a finals, knows what character traits are needed to be a winning team.

Nurk isn't that guy. He needs a reality check on his skill level. If he was smart, he'd become a defensive minded center, instead of thinking he's a point-center.

I'll do this again because it's true

* Portland has four 6'3 & under guards in the 9 man rotation rotation
* those 4 guards take 68% of the team's shots
* those 4 guards use 67% of of the team's possessions
* those 4 guards hog 67% of the payroll...and Simons will be getting a new contract next summer

* those 4 guards rank 6th-9th on the team in defensive rating among the 9 man rotation
* those 4 guards average 121 of Portland's 240 total minutes, over half of the minutes

when your 4 worst rotational defenders are 6'3 & under and play half of the minutes, there's a ceiling on how good the team defense can be. We're seeing it

* three of the 4 guards not named Lillard combine to average less assists than Lillard

when at 67% of a team's shots, possessions, and payroll are consumed by 4 undersized shoot-first guards, with only one of those guards having anything close to all-star talent, the roster is hopelessly out of balance. Coaching won't solve it. There's only one fix and Portland has the wrong GM for that fix

Yeah, if only he were a defensive-minded center.

we obviously disagree

if nurk is smart, he will leave and never look back, he can have this very same role elsewhere

he has nothing to regret if he leaves portland

This needs to be put in front of Olshey, then his replacement, Kolde, Jody, and Chauncey every day until there is a change.

Why would he want the very same role "elsewhere"? Unless it's back in Europe I cannot see why he would leave? Money is good from whomever pays it. Right now the Blazers write his checks. If he sulks his way off a team again he will never get as good a paycheck as he gets here? Nobody will want a center that proves to be toxic. Nurk needs to play well right now.

he wouldnt, but thats the point

he would leave in pursuit of a better situation for him, which may or may not happen, but at least theres a chance, while here in portland hes in situation where hes clearly unhappy

if the blazers offer him new contract, a good one, his unhappiness might become happiness... well see how this plays out

Let's see:

Denver, Philli, Minni, Clevland, Utah, Miami, Chicago, Phoenix, Indi, the Bucks, Clippers, Warriors, Nets, Lakers have either better centers than him or no need for him.

Arguably Atlanta would consider him for the role he has in Portland if they decide they do not want a rim-runner instead of Capella.

The Rockets and Thunder are rebuilding so he makes no sense there, Valancuinas and him are about the same value on the Pelicans.

Would the Clippers take him over Holmes? I am not sure why, they have large, mobile wings for their defense, he does not give them anything they lack.

Maybe the Knicks, Celtics, Wizards, Mavs and Hornets (if they, too decide to move from Mason Plumlee)? I have no idea if the Magic / Detroit would care.

On the Spurs he would be held even more in check than in Portland since Pop does not suffer fools - and I am not sure why the Grizzlies would move from one slow center to another.

Frankly, I will be surprised if there is much of a market for him as anything other than a backup center behind a better one (and we saw how that went in Denver) or at best, what he is in Portland, expected to be a defensive anchor.

Nurk is a good role player, anything over that is wishful thinking, I am afraid.

He's betting on himself at this point. He better play the cards right or there won't be any winnings.
Best situation as far as I'm concerned is him doing the dirty work and becoming better at what he is already good at.
If he could shoot he might have a bigger role. So maybe he better work on some skills? Look at Jokic torching teams from three? Nurk has to at least develop a shot from the foul line. Maybe even develop a sky hook? That three he is trying to shoot isn't falling.

Very well said!

Billups not going rite this ship and olshey vision of this team is bad vision. The last 2 year what I see was not good years yes we made the playoffs. One winning play-in games and last was couple games being in another play-in game. As I said last year we are very unbalanced roster. This year is not much better we just changed the names on the team with different skill set. But the main indegredents hasn't changed on this team so the cake will bake but fall flat before it's ready to eat.
