Of course, he is not overrated. OP question is wrong. Is he overrated as a leader? May be.

does the thread title ask if he is overated as a player? As a leader?

the extent some will go to prove someone else wrong instead of just discuss blows my mind.
Overrated could be any or all of those things.

No I dont think he's overrated. He's that good as a player. What he is likely overrated at is as a Leader. Not that he isn't a good leader, but not sure he's the best in the league. Leaders lead by example, and Lillard has never really shown he has much interest in defense.

Do you think Dame is an mvp caliber player when he doesn't show interest in defense?

yeah but im not here for drama. Im just trying to discuss Dame as a player and if he is overated or not. I can do without the snark, belittling or anything else people do here.

I think Dame is rated accordingly... No one claims he's a great defender but He still carry's an entire franchise on his back and people see that. He hasn't had another All-Star on the squad since LA and still makes the playoffs every year. He always has ups and downs through out the season and generally falls in and out of the MVP conversation too. I know people are freaking out because Portland has played like crap against good teams but Portland is still in the 6th spot and that's primarily because of Dame. Now, is he loyal to a fault? maybe... But that's probably the only reason he's still in Portland.

Yes but the question is how he’s rated- over or under or properly rated. I think he’s rated properly. Nobody rates him high as a defender. Nobody has him in the Lebron category, etc. As for MVP I have never considered him a legitimate MVP candidate but for those who have, not every MVP is elite defensively. Like Bird.

This team's star is all about loyalty so he will not flex his influence to institute personnel change at any level. That is going to have to come from above and if he is flexing his influence to absolutely stop change then that's the only time his loyalty is a problem and the organization should move on from him.

If he sees his role as the ultimate team guy that has the back of everyone around him until ownership/management moves them and then moves on to having the back of everyone else that has played with or coached him (like he's shown over and over again)... that's a strength and a rare one. It never has to fall on Dame to be a catalyst for coaching changes or player movement... he can be the best in the game by leading through his example and supporting those around him. He doesn't have to diagnose roster problems or problems with coaching strategy, that's just not in his job description.

Dame knows he has the respect upstairs, he’s earned it for sure. I dont think he’s the type to try and force any charges as some players have. I do think and its just my gut feeling that both ownership and management would reach out to Dame on certain major issues, not all but I think they value is take, as mutual respect. That's part of the whole loyalty thing it often is reciprocal.

I think i recall a few defensive specialists being considered for mvp at one point but didn't have the best offense?

I dont know, im asking, but wasnt Rose considered a good defender, i also thought Westbrook was a great on ball defender... when he wants to be?

At any rate thst list is enough to show me there have indeed ben mvps who arent great defenders as well so maybe Dame has a chance? But then the team ball factor. All of those mvps had a team go to the finals( not necessarily the year they won it) Though.


if the thing is Dame is hurt then he needs to pull an lbj and take some time off.

His NBA records are an amazing thing. It seems like the question is, how can some of that translate to the post-season, and can the team grow with him as the franchise player. Right now, they are fighting for their non-play in game lives at #6. That would be fine if this was Dame's 3rd or 4th season but in season 9, it seems not out of line to ask why it hasn't become better?

There's simply nothing "normal" about season 9....Dame has had a rough year.personally as well ..roster changes...injuries...training camp where players couldn't be near each other...NO FANS....a huge change in how the game is played...the 3 pt shot leads to long rebounds which lead to fast break dunks that you can't defend if you're a 6'2 guard who shot it from 35 ft....nothing about this season is normal..every night I look at NBA scores and see teams putting up 145 pts and teams losing by 20...it's a weird season...COVID has not helped the cause...Nas talked about his brutal recovery from it....injuries ...yeah...nobody wants to talk about them but CJ was out from Jan 6....Nurk has been out for ages....chemistry is not there...defense takes chemistry on a string...we're not close to playoff level yet but it's not on Dame ...he is doing pretty much all he can and his assists are way up..
